May 25th, 1851
John Kerr to James Kerr, 25 May 1851,
Dear Uncle:
It is now a good wile since I wrote youperhaps too longbut I depend on Wm.
Or David to write, altho' I think they have not done so... I came to this
place "Napoleon" in the beginning of April. 1 was not doing well at New
Orleans, and got an offer of better wages to come here. It is a small
village, situated at the mouth of the Arkansas River, 640 miles above New
Orleans. A merchant of N.O., and one of this state established a house here
to do a general business, grocery, Dry Good, etc., and also for the purpose
of re-shipping goods left here by Cincinnati and New Orleans boats intended
for the interior of this state. The concern is a new one, but is doing
pretty well. I keep the Books and attend to things in general. I get $50
per month and room and board, etc., which is equal to $80 in New Orleans
without board, which is considered good wages there. There are other
advantages, however, which make the situation worth more, that is by
forming acquaintance and learning something of the country I probably can,
before long, get into business in my own account. A new country presents a
much better prospect for that than a city or an old country. I wish I had
come here to this state ratherinstead of going to Pennsylvania and killing
myself teaching school for nearly nothing and studying what has been of no
pecuniary advantage to me. Why the best wages in Pennsylvania for teaching
was $20, in one or two places $25 without board. The other day a planter
across the river (Mississippi) offered me $250 for 10 months to teach his
family about 4 children, and give board, washing, etc. be sides. That would
be $25 per month clear. Now James K could get that if he was here just now.
I wish he was. Anyhow, if he is getting better or thinks and has any reason
to believe he will get better, I would advise him to come out here. I can
get him plenty of situations to teachthe schools will be small, perhaps
only a family or two and he can do it well. People are anxious to get
teachers, many, I might say most of the Plant ers have to send their
children from home 4 or 500 miles and they would much rather employ a
teacher at home. If Jas can stand another voyage across the "big pond" and
if he desires, let him bundle up his 'duds' and make for New Orleans; then
strike for "Napoleon" and he can get em ployment in a short time. When
tired of teaching, he can go home again if he feels unwellhe will have
moneyor he can get into a store, I think, after a while. This is a fine
healthy state, when you get back from the Mississippi. There are many
flourishing towns in it and it is settling fast. I expect to settle in some
healthy little town on the Arkansas river, bye and bye, and have a share in
a store. I have one or two places in view where a store will do well, and
when I have about $2,000 capital, I can commence for myself. I do wish I
had come to Arkansas 10 years ago.
This place "Napoleon" is but very small, containing about 100 in habitants.
It is not a pleasant place to live. The Mississippi overflows it every
year, sometimes twice; this renders it unhealthy. They are going to make a
"Levee" (embankment) this year to keep out the water. It has good
facilities for trade and many say that in 10 years, it will be a large
place. The people of the place are not like those of the North. In fact,
the Southern Americans are different from the northern a great deal. They
are far inferior in intelligence and morality. They have not the same
steady, sober, peaceable, persevering and enterprising character possessed
by their Northern brethern [sic]. Many of them are ignorant (unable to
read), rude, filthy in their habits, and intemperate. Those of this town
particularly so, especially as to filth and intemperance. Drinking is their
principal, I might say only enjoyment. And 0! how strong drink degrades a
peopleturns them from men to imbeciles and demonds [sic], by turns. I never
was before so strongly impressed with the evil tendency of alcohol on man,
as I am now. Its habitual use produces the most melancholy effects;
deteriorates the body, stupefies the mind and degrades the soul; besides it
almost destroys the moral feelings and blunts all the sensibilities of our
nature. The intemporate [sic] habits of the people here, form my principal
objection to the place. This county consumes a vast quantity of "liquor"
and it presents a greater amount of mortality, taken from the statistics of
the State, than any other county in it. The state of Mississippi lies
across the river opposite us. The county in it directly opposite this one
is by no means unhealthy, and there is not a glass of liquor sold in it,
and very few use it!
The passengers with Sam were very kind to him. He got his leg hurt somehow
and an old woman and her daughter cooked for him half way over. The mate
was very kind to him. The ship came in about 8 p. O'C. and I was on board
about 10. Sam was in bed but someone brought him up. I wouldn't have known
him from Adam. Sam is quite childish and a little dull I think, but will
brighten, I hope. I don't know where the two young men went, that came with
him. One of them got drunk the day after their arrival and some tavern
runner blackened his eyes, because he wouldn't got with him. I would have
nothing to do with him nor take any interest in him after his being drunk.
From what I saw among the passengers the night of their arrival, I could
not help thinking that the Irish character presented a feature different
from that of any other nation. When I got aboard, the bacchanalian songs
and boisterous laughter of about 30, almost drowned every other sound. A
number of them were running round the vessel, staggering, swearing, and
boasting of how they could fight, etc. There they were, in all their native
filth, unwashed and unshaven, swallowing drafts of their country's curse,
and as careless of what was to come of them as if they were to take
possession of a farm each and be independent tomorrow. Just at a time when
they required all the forethought and prudence they possessed, they drowned
all in drink. Did ever the lunatic display greater folly than this? I saw
many steady, sober, sensible people, but many were drunk, even the women
were staggering under the effects of Whiskey! A newly come Irishman
despises the negroes here, but they are more civilized than he.
This part of the United States is almost exclusively a cotton growing
country and it is considered the best for that article of any other in the
country. Farming is done altogether by negroes; Planters owning from 10 to
100 of these. The land is very rich and planters have done well the last 2
or 3 years, cotton having been high for three seasons. An acre produces, I
think, if I remember right, about 500 pounds cotton, which sells for about
$50I believe they raise sometimes 800 pounds. The plant is coming up now; I
have not seen it in the field in any other shape. I can tell you what it is
like and how raised etc. again October. I frequently visit at a planters
across the riverhe shows me his farm etc., and I will learn how planting
and raising Cotton is performed. So far, the process resembles that of
sowing turnips and the plant now is very small and quite a tender one, as
much as so any vegetable or flower of the gardenI have but little news to
send you. Robt. Thompson and family who lived in New Orleans, went all to
California in March last. Francis Henderson is there. In coming from N.O.
to Napoleon, I got acquainted with John E Douglas from near Parkgate; he
was clerk on the steamboat I came up on. He had lived in N.O. for the last
3 years but I never saw him. He was well when I saw him last, a few days
ago. Tell James that Sam Rainey is married.
David wants Jas. to send him a newspaperhe says he has seen no Belfast
paper since he came to this country. Jas. promised to send him some. I hope
you are all in good health and trust that Elizabeth still continues well.
In my opinion she should take plenty of exercise in the open air. Avoid
close roonu. Bathe or wash the whole body frequently in cold water; and
with proper precautions in regard to food, she need not fear consumption. I
am convinced people bring almost every disease upon themselves, and this
among the rest. Close rooms, with the windows always down, and 3 or 4
sleeping in a room, perhaps 2 in a bed, is quite sufficient to create
disease. It is almost sure to do so in time. I expect to hear from you soon
after the receipt of this. Let me know what Jas. thinks of coming. If he
thinks his health will admit, I think he ought to come. When he was
returning home, I told him if he wished to come back, I would pay his
passageso I will. I can send a draft to you if you furnish him with money.
Let him come when he chooses, anytime will do. The draft Sam brought was
paid in New York. I sent itto a merchant there who got it cashed. If I had
known no merchant or responsible person there, it would not have been worth
a cent. Crawford is a fool if he said that anyone in N. Orleans would pay
it. My health is middling. I am troubled with Dyspepsia a little. Write
soon; my regards to allto Uncles David and Samuel.

Who was the father of Nancy BEHYMER ???
My great-great-grandfather, Joseph CARR, married Nancy BEHYMER (or BHYMER)
in Campbell County, KY, 8 February 1848. Bond was posted by Martin BHYMER,
"consent of the [unnamed] father of the within lady personally given."
Information is from "Campbell County, Kentucky Marriages, 1795-1850" by
Stephen W. Worrell. He states:
"Two provisions [of the Act...of 1798] are of particular interest to
genealogists. The first is that marriage licenses were to be issued by the
clerk of court in the county where the female resided. ... The second is
that consent was required by the father or guardian if either party was
under 21. Thus, a strong presumptive case exists that a man listed in the
records as giving consent -- of the same surname as the bride -- is her
father. Unless that relationship is stated, however, the case is only
presumptive, not proven: the person could be a paternal uncle or
grandfather who served as guardian, for example, or a brother when both
parents were dead. Happily, many such relationships are stated;
unfortunately, many others are not. Where the person giving consent is not
identified, the phrase in brackets '[relationship not stated]' follows the
citation. ... "
I have found a lot of information about the early generations of BEHYMER
families (with their *many* creative spelling variations of the original
BECKLEHAUSENMERR) in Clermont County, Ohio, beginning in 1805. I know that
they moved freely to and from Kentucky across the river.
Later census records indicate that Nancy BEHYMER was born in Ohio, as was
her father. Does anyone have any information to help me determine whether
Martin BHYMER was her father?

Nancy Behymer's father was Martin (gave consent for the wedding).
Joseph Carr was a riverboat captain. Apparently, Nancy left or divorced
Joseph and moved to West Plains, MO. I visited the area and got photos of
some graves, such as Edward Carr...
According to an interview with Letha Eades on Dec 4, 1990, Nancy and Joseph
had children named Walter and LeRoy. LeRoy moved to Michigan after his mother
died and he died in Indiana. Walter's adopted son, Cleo Carr, moved to
Indiana first. LeRoy lived with Fannie Watkins. Nancy later moved to Newport,
Arkansas (my home town) and is buried there (although I could not find her
grave).
I'd be happy to share any information I have about Joseph and Nancy. I
cannot seem to get back further in my tree than Joseph. I'm stuck!!

can help you. Good luck with your search.

It is all a matter of perspective. If you're going back into your roots,
an unknown male progenitor is very logically Father Carr. But looking at it
from a family tree, moving from a single known progenitor toward the present
day, you end up with unknown male and female children. Doesn't seem very
logical to name unknown children as Father and Mother when you don't even
know if they've had the honor.
As for World Family Tree, I find the dates ugly, but I accept them as
part of the new landscape. Not much you or I can do about them, is there?
I like having places listed as city, ST (Name of Co), but I can't enforce
my format on others. I don't find others' formats annoying; I just change my
database to reflect my own style. You might find more peace in that
seemingly more pragmatic approach.

I am researching William Carr who was listed in Ernest Cruickshank's "The
King's Royal Regiment of NY" as having been born 1n 1732 in Ireland. He
came into the Mohawk Valley of New York State and rented farm land from Sir
John Johnston. He received a crown grant in Canada along with his
son-in-law, David McCuen. William's daughter, Sarah petitioned to have his
land given to her and stated that she was William's only child. William
was a farmer and a weaver. Does anyone have this line. Thanks for
listening. Walt

I am looking for any information on Samuel Carr. The first information we
have on him is when he married Nancy McMillin on January 14, 1845 in
Mississippi. They had at least two sons, Nathaniel Carr 12/27/1847 -7/2/1929
and Amziah Carr 7/13/1855 - 1/7/1922. According to the 1850 cenus, Samuel
was born in Alabama.
I have had no luck finding him in Alabama. Does anyone have any information
on him?

I'd be interested in your Carr descendants, including female Carrs, their
husbands and kids. Not so interested in associated lines beyond female Carrs'
children. The family moved from Ireland to Mississippi? Any other
geographical points along the way you've come across?
Two things to report. (see below)

Would like to discuss W.H. (Billy)Carr with someone that knows who his
parents are. The best lead that I have so far is that his dad was Josiah Carr
and his mother was named Mary (what else!) The family history states that
Billy came to Arkansas from Ms after there was a small altercation and he
felt like he would live longer if he left the state.
Sooooooooo---he borrowed a mule and went to Arkansas where he was married
three times and raised a large family in Lincoln County and Drew County
Arkansas.
I would like to prove this theory because I can appreciate a man who knows to
get while the getting is good.
Thanks:)

Hope these help someone! Woonsocket, RI and Blackstone, MA are neighboring
towns, and Woonsocket (and maybe Blackstone, as well) has a large
percentage of French-Canadian immigrants, who came to work in some of the
many mills along the Blackstone River. I only listed the Carr parentage,
but I also have the parents of the others - if these are your ancestors,
please let me know, and I'll supply the other info I have. Some of these
dates are so recent, there might be some Carr listers listed!

What makes him "HER" Absolom Hurst? I'm sure there are quite a lot of people
descended from this man. Not all have the correct info in the beginning, but
change it as the corrections become known. I don't know where your homepage
is but I'm sure it is a good one and that you have posted what you have
found and if there are corrections that she has she sure could of handled it
a lot differnt.

>Hello:
>I have just joined this web site in hopes of finding some of my family.
You see, I am a Carr by birth. There is a lot of my family out there that I
do not know about and therefore I cannot find. My father died when I was
nine years old and that was a few years ago. My grandparents died in 1972
and there has been no one left to help me with my family. My grandfather
was one of the sweetest and kindest men I have ever known. I hope that
there are a few more Carr's out there like him. Can we not work together
and love one another like the Bible says. After all we are from one family,
if not the Carr's, then the family of GOD.
