For those of you interested in possible British antecedents of the
CARR/KERR family might be interested in the following article. I don't know
who in the family wrote it (or sent it to us). A certain caution should be
observed; I have no documentation on any of it. If anyone has comments,
verifications or corrections, I would be grateful to receive them.

================================
The family name of CARR dates back to the days of the Norman Conquest of
England. The charter of the Battle Abbey bears the name of one William
KARRIE, who fought at the Battle of Hastings, as a noble in the train of
William the Conqueror. His descendants settled in the north of England and
in the succeeding years spread throughout the Border Lands of Scotland.
In England the Norman French name of KARRIE was changed to CARRE, CAR, or
CARR. In Scotland most of the families took the names KAR, KER, and KERR.
There was even a few known as KERSS A William KERSS was gamekeeper at
Ferniehirst Castle prior to 1860. Today most of the families goes ny the
names KERR or CARR.
The Kerrs who became notable in the Border Lands of Scotland were the
descendants of two brothers, Ralph and Robert Ker of Ker Hall in
Lancashire, England. They were living in Roxburyshire in 1340. Ralph and
Robert obtained their lands from King David II of Scotland.Robert was given
the lands of Oultoburn. Ralph founded the Family of Ferniehirst. When King
James IV was killed at the Battle of Flodden by the English in 1513, his
widow Margaret Tudor married Sir Archibald Douglas, the Earl of Angus. She
had been an English agent all her life in Scotland and soon converted the
Earl of Angus to her beliefs. This brought national political changes to
the Border Country. However, her son King James V grew up to hate the name
of Douglas and despise his mother Margaret. The Ferniehirst Kerrs allied
themselves with King James V while the Cessford Kerrs became followers of
the Douglas. When the Earl of Angus was exiled the Cessford Kerrs returned
to Scotland and with the aid of English arms deprived Sir John Kerr of
Ferniehirst of his castle. This he regained however, in 1749 with the aid
of the French. Rivalry still continued between the two families. Sir Andrew
Kerr was created the Ninth Baron of Ferniehirst and knighted in the year
1483. He served under King James IV and King James V as a celebrated Border
Chieftain. He was a descendant of Ralph Ker. He received the appointment of
Warden of the Middle Marches, and Provost of Jedburgh in 1502, a position
he lost after the Battle of Flodden.
A kinsman of his during these troubled times, Sir Andrew Kerr of Cessford,
later received the same appointment as Provost of Jedburgh. He was a
henchman of Lord Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scotland. Andrew was
present when Lord Darnley and several of his friends dragged young David
Risso, the Queen's page, from the room and stabbed him to death. Queen Mary
was pregnant with James IV at the time and didn't resist when Sir Andrew
held a cocked pistol to her head. Andrew fought at the battle of Flodden
and was later killed at the Battle of Melrose by followers of Sir Walter
Scott of Bucclerurk in 1526. His death was avenged when Sir Walter of
Bucclerurk was killed at Edinburgh in 1552.
Sir John Kerr, son of Sir Andrew Kerr of Ferniehirst, lived during some of
the most violent Border fighting. He lost and regained his castle and led
his men many times against the English. The atrocities committed against
his people by the English soldier made his followers eager to take as many
of the enemy alive as possible.
Sir Thomas Kerr, Baron of Ferniehirst, son of Sir John, and a staunch
supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots, fought for her at the Battle of
Longside, in 1568. Her remained true to her cause as long as there was any
hope of restoring her to the throne. He was the father of William and Robin
Kerr. Robin changed his name to Robert Carr at the English court. He became
Earl of Somerset and Treasurer of Scotland. Sir William had also changed
his name to Carr when he moved to London. He held large estates in
Northumberland County. He was a member of the English Parliament during the
last days of Queen Elizabeth's reign. He was a resident of London during
the beginning of "Puritan England" in 1583. The father of four sons, he
appears to have been the last Baron of Ferniehirst. His eldest son Benjamin
married Martha Hardington of Northumberland in September of 1613. Two of
their sons, Robert and Caleb, sailed to the Colonies in 1635 on the ship
Elizabeth Ann. Robert to become wealthy land owner and Caleb to become
Governor of Rhode Island in 1695. He died during his term of office.
One of the more famous of the Ferniehirst Kerrs, Robert Kerr, son of Sir
Thomas Kerr by his second wife Janet Scott (sister of Sir Walter Scott of
Bucclerurk) changed his name to Robert Carr. He followed King James VI of
Scotland to London where James VI became King James I of England.Robert had
been a Page to James in Scotland. In England he advanced rapidly in Court.
A favorite of the King, he became Groom of the Bed Chamber in 1607, First
Viscount of Rochester in 1611. He was knighted in the Order of the Garter
in 1613 and made Sixth Earl of Somerset and Treasurer of Scotland in
1614.He was given the Estates of Sir Walter Raleigh at Sherborne. He
married the Lady Frances Howard, daughter of the Earl of Suffolk (also
known as "Little Fannie Howard") of the powerful Howard clique.
The Earl of Somerset had a very close friend, Sir Thomas Overbury, with
whom he shared many of his powers. It became almost impossible to gain
audience with the King without permission from Overbury or Sir Robert, who
also kept a tight hold on the purse strings of the Treasury.
It is understandable why t
Their enemies were jubilant when George Villars became Duke of Buckingham
and replaced Sir Robert in the King's favor. Soon after this Sir Thomas
Overbury ran into trouble. He was appointed ambassador to Russia by the
king, an office he refused..King James at once ordered his arrest and he
was placed in the Tower of London. While there he was poisoned and died.
Sir Robert and Lady Frances were accused of the murder and tried for the
crime. During the trial King James offered Robert a pardon if he would
confess the deed, but this the Earl steadfastly refused to do maintaining
he was innocent. The two were found guilty and sent to the Tower. Later,
they were released by the King and forced to spend the rest of their lives
in a country mansion, with the stipulation that they could travel no
farther than three miles from this property. They had one daughter, Anne,
who married the First Duke of Bedford.
The Coat of Arms of the Ferniehirst Kerrs has "Three Mullets or Guiles on a
Chevron, a Crest of Stags Head, Erased PP another Coupled." Ferniehirst
Castle is in Roxburyshire, Scotland near Jedburgh across the Cheviot Hills
from Northumberland, England.
Some other Kerrs and Carrs listed in the history are: Sir Robert Ker of
Ferniehirst murdered by an Englishman named Heron. Robert was Warden of the
Marches under King James IV. Sir Robert Kerr of Cessford 1650, the First
Earl of Roxburgh. Sir Mark Kerr, 1609, First Earl of Lothian. Sir William
Kerr, 1722, became Lord Jedburgh. Sir William Kerr of Ferniehirst married
Anne Kerr a Cessford in 1631, and became the Third Earl of Lothian. (This
marriage reunited the two families.) Sir John Kerr had a charter of all
lands and tenements in Auddlorunburn in 1357. Sir Walter Kerr of Sesseford
was a follower of King James III in 1491. Sir William Carr of County
Lincoln was knighted April 23, 1603. Sir Thomas Carr of County Bedington,
Sheriff of Sussex was knighted June 19, 1800. Sir William Carr, son of Sir
Robert (ibid.) was knighted March 6,1626. Sir William Ogle Carr, Chief
Justice of the Supreme Curt of Cheylen was knighted August 14, 1854. Edward
Carre of Hillington County, Surrey was knighted October 3, 1624. Edward
Carre, a gentleman pensioner, knighted on 3, Oct. 1624. Robert Karr, a
Scotsman, knighted at Hamilton Court on Dec. 23, 1607. Richard Ker was
summoned to answer charges of trespass at Fenewicke in 1279. William Kerre
of Ayrshire, Henry Ker of Edenburghshire, and Nicol Kerre of Pebbleshire
rendered homage to the King in 1296. Edward Carre of County Lincoln
knighted April 23, 1603. George Carr knighted August 3, 1662. John Kerr of
Hetton, son of Thomas Kerr, of Ford Castle was Captain of the Royal Castle.

I'm pretty new to this list and so far I haven't seen anyone's line that I
knew we conect with, so I thought that I would send mine in. I don't have a
lot though.
CARR, William b: unknown d: prob before 1881 (wife remarried that year)
...+ DENSMORE, Elizabeth b:Aug 24, 1854 in Cartright, Ontario d: Sept 13,
1925 in Winnipeg, Manitoba They had at least 2 children:
1. William Bartholomew CARR b: April 11, 1873 in Ontario (maybe North Bay)
d: 1945 m: Jan 4, 1895 to Margaret Elizabeth SHEFFER (who was his cousin) b:
1873 in Ontario (maybe North Bay) d: 1952 in Decatur, IL They had only one
child who was Beatrice Lida CARR b: July 1896 in WI
2. Dorina CARR b:March 1880 in New Lowell, Ontario
William CARR (that died about 1880) is the furthest back we can get. It is
thought that his parents may have come from Ireland and that he was Scotch-
Irish. Is this at all likely? I'm pretty much just starting this line and am
in the dark basically.
Thanks,

I am new to the mailing list, having signed on January 4. I haven't
received
any mail yet and am wondering why not.
In the meantime, I would like to tell you of the families I have just begun
researching. I have received information from some on the Owen County list,
but these ancestors that were from Franklin County, and I am hoping someone
on
this list can possibly provide more information for me. Here is what I
know:
My great-grandfather was Reuben Carr, b. 1 May 1876, d. 20 Jan. 1931, m.
Mary
Tiny Mitchell, b. 1 Sept. 1876, d. 9 May 1950.
His father was James Carr*, b. 16 Mar. 1826, d. 14 Apr. 1897, m. 20 Oct.
1864
to Sarah Taylor (2nd wife), b. 1845, d. 1929. Their children were:
1) Annie Beatrice Carr, b. 2 Sept. 1865.
2) Bowen Carr, b. 1867, lived about 2 years.
3) Susannah Carr Murphy, b. Nov. 1869.
4) Ellen Carr Taylor, b. 1871.
5) Lemuel Carr, b. 1874, lived about 2 years.
6) Reuben Carr, b. 1 May 1876, d. 20 Jan. 1931.
7) Martha Wise Carr, b. 16 Feb. 1877.
8) Elizabeth Carr Barnes, b. 1880.
9) James Carr, b. 1884.
* James Carr's first wife was Mary Ann McMullen. They were married 22 Dec.
1846. Their children were:
1) Preston Carr, b. about 1847, c. about 1849.
2) Theodore Carr, b. 5 Nov. 1848.
3) Isabel Carr, b. 11 May 1850.
4) Mary Ann Carr, b. 22 Jan. 1852.
James Carr's father was Reuben Carr, b. 1794, d. 1847, m. 27 Oct. 1807 to
Susannah Miles in Woodford Co., KY. She was b. 16 May 1790, d. 19 June
1871.
Both died in Franklin Co., KY. Their children, all born in Franklin Co.,
were:
1) Arthur Carr, b. 17 Sept. 1808.
2) Enos Miles Carr, b. 1812.
3) William H. Carr, b. 1814.
4) Edward Carr, b. 1815.
5) Eliza Ann Carr, b. 21 Oct. 1815.
6) Preston Carr, b. 1817.
7) Cynthia Ann Carr, b. 7 Aug. 1819.
8) Bianca De Alvers Carr, b. 13 June 1821.

I have learned quite a bit in the last few weeks on the Carr family, but I
know nothing about the families of Mary Tiny Mitchell, Sarah Taylor, or
Susannah Miles. I don't even know the names of their parents. If anything
rings a bell to anyone on this list, I would really appreciate any
information
you can provide. Thank you.

I suspect the father of your William P. CARR may be a brother of my Reuben

out.
I do have more descendants of the families above.

I need to find where William CARR, b. about 1730-left Albemarle Co VA 1793
with wife Alsey, went from Albemarle Co,. Or a probate record that provides
information on his children.....
John Fendall CARR (Rev War) b. 1764 (maybeAlbemarle Co.), VA d. 1838,
Marshall Co., TN, married 1783, Albemarle Co., VA Elizabeth DALTON. Is (not
100& proven) is believed by me to be son of William CARR (b. abt 1730-40) &
Alsey ?. I am a descendant of John & Elizabeth DALTON CARR's daughter
[proven] Elizabeth CARR who married Alexander MARTIN [proven] son of Brig.
Gen. Joseph MARTIN & Susannah GRAVES
William CARR (b. abt 1730-40)- left Albemarle Co., VA 1793 m. Alsey. Is
there anyone who has any idea where this William Carr went? Also believed
to have had Thomas CARR m. Mary Dalton & Rachel Deering , & mabe a Robert
CARR probably others. Earliest mention of this William CARR in Albemarle is
1762.
This William (not 100% proven) is believed by me at this time to be oldest
son of William CARR b. 1707 & d. 1760 m. Susannah.
This William CARR is son of [proven] (need the given name of his father)
CARR & (need the given name) CHILES.
Can anyone prove or disprove this lineage?
Will gladly share documentation on all parts of this lineage with anyone
who is interested in the documentation I have collected on this line.

I am sorry to have waised the lists time posting the Will & COURT CASE
for William Carr b. about 1710 d. 1760 son of CARR & CHILES. In my own
theory the Will, Court Case with states Heirs of William Carr & later
deeds, other wills & other documents, and maybe the fact that this William
a bit young to be Gideon's father all prove he is not the father of said
Gideon Carr. But I guess this documentation was of no value.
I feel the William CARR d. 1711 is the father of William CARR but then
that is only my opion, the only other information I have seen on this which
listed William d.1760 as father was in undocumented published material.
Does anyone have proof that William CARR b. about 1710 d. 1760 son of CARR
& CHILES m. Susannah ? was the father of Gideon CARR b. about 1711. If so
please send that documentation. Thank you.
I also am in great need of the proof for William CARR m. Alsey & lived
in Albemarle Co., VA on the land from his father, had dealings with
Ludwick O'Neal & other members of the family of said William CARR d. 1760,
is the said son. Where did he go when he left Albemarle Co.????? Also the
sister of the mother of William Carr d. 1760 m. Sutherland, some how both
this Sutherland & William Carr m. Alsey used Fendal as the given names of
children, I need to know the Fendall tie to this family. Thank you for any
information, documents, clues for this family.

Reference query from Lauren Kester I have several John Carrs in my line and
did research on Sgt. John Carr and Margaret Ewing. It is not my line
unfortunately but I want to pass on a few things I discovered. There is a
microfilm from the LDS Family History Center, No. 1697760, Item 9, or Film
#1321077, Item 3, (please check out the number) which is "History and
Genealogy of the Epler, Oldwiler, Huckleberry, Carr and Ewing Families." I
highly recommend you read this as it has a wealth of information for your
line. If you have access to a genealogy library look for the book, printed
by Illinois State Journal Co., Springfield, Ill., compiled by Mrs. Emma
Epler Knudson to cover the years 1728-1913. P. 113 pertains to the Carr
Family and states that " John Carr came from Ballynahinch, near Belfast,
County Down, Ireland to Pennsylvania. As he was leaving home his mother
gave him a bible which was printed in Edinburgh in 1756, and is now in
possession of Mrs. Emma E. Knudson, a descendant of John Carr. . . . John
Carr came to America with his brother Michael, who lived in Chester county,
Pennsylvania, as shown by the tax lists. These brothers became separated
after coming to this country and never met afterward. ... John Carr was a
soldier in the Revolutionary war. ... " I did read from the Daughters of
American Revolution lineage book that Lieut. John Epler, George Huckleberry
and Sergt. John Carr are listed under membership of Mrs. Margaret Ann
Epler Galt No. 66553 and Mrs. Emma Epler Knudson, No. 66554. Good luck
with your search. Phyllis Wise
Below are the two documents that show the children of William Carr who d.
1760. His widow Susannah m. 2nd Ludwick O'neal. I can not prove parentage
of this William other than his father was surnamed CARR & his mother
CHILES, which is proven & documented..
William Carr of Spotsylvania County wrote his will on 2 August 1760.
[Spotsylvania Co Will Book B 497-501] He named his wife, Susannah, and
eleven children. Those who received land (which was in both Spotsylvania
and Louisa Counties) were Thomas, William, An, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Walter
Chiles, Charles Brooks and Agnes Brooks. [Although Thomas was the first son
named in the will, he apparently was a minor at the time. The widow,
Susannah was appointed guardian to Charles Brooks Carr, Agnes Brooks Carr,
Walter Chiles Carr, Pheobe Carr & Thomas Carr, orphans of William Carr.
William Armstrong Crozier, ed. "Virginia County Records: Spotsylvania
County, 1721-1800. Vol. I (1905; Baltimore: Genealogical, rep 1990.) 73.]
Daughters Susanna, Sarah and Mary each received a cow and calf. [These
three daughters had already been given land: Susanna and her husband
William Crenshaw in 1751; Sarah and her husband, Mordecai Hord in 1752; and
Mary and her husband Nicholas Crenshaw in 1755. "William and Mary
Quarterly. 1st ser. 7 (1899): 132.] In respect to the remainder of his
estate, he said in a clause that was later to figure in litigation, "I give
all the rest of my estate both real and personal not herein particularly
mentioned to be equally divided between my wife and children (William, Ann,
Elizabeth, Charles, Agnes, Walter, Phoebe and Thomas), and I do hereby give
the estate by this clause of my will devised to my said wife and
respectively and to their heirs forever, provided nevertheless that
[should] either of my said children die before they arrive to the age of
twenty-one or marry that their share or part given by this clause be sold
by my executors and the money arising by such a sale be equally divided
between my wife (if living) and all my children and their legal
representatives." His wife was named an executor, along with Edward Herndon
& Joseph Brock. Witnesses to the will were Anthony Foster, William Ellis
and John Gordon.
Reports of Cases Determined in the General Court of Virginia 1730 to 1740
and 1768-1772 by Thomas Jefferson Charlottesville, Published by F Carr &
Co. 1829, Jefferson Clark, Printer. P. 132-136. Herndon et al. v. Carr:
William Carr the testator, having a wife and several children viz. William,
the defendant, his eldest son and heir at law, and others, plts., and being
seised and possessed of an estate in lands, slaves, and personal chattels,
by will, dated August 2, 1760, after giving several specific legacies,
bequeathed the residuum of his estate in these words: all the rest of my
estate, both real and personal, not herein particularly mentioned, to be
equally divided between my wife and children, viz. William, Ann, Elizabeth,
Charles, Agnes, Walter, Phoebe, and Thomas; and I do hereby give the estate
by this clause of my will devised, to my wife and children, respectively,
and to their heirs forever. Provided nevertheless, that if either of my
said children die before they arrive to the age of twenty-one years or
marriage, that their part given by this clause, be sold by my executors,
and the money arriving by such sale be equally divided among my wife, if
living, and all my children or their representatives.' By a codicil to his
will annexed, dated Aug 12, 1760, he empowered his executors, of whom
Southerland a defendant was one, to divide his personal estate according to
his will. Within a few days afterwards, one Walter Chiles having a
considerable estate in lands, slaves, and personal goods, died intestate,
leaving as his representatives, the children of two deceased sisters, viz.
The testator William Carr, and his younger brothers and sisters, children
of the eldest sister, and the defendant Southerland and his younger
brothers and sisters, children of the youngest sister. Where by the sd.
William Carr, the testator and the sd Southerland, became entitled each to
a moiety of the slaves of the said Chiles, paying to their brothers and
sisters a proportion of their value. William Carr, the testator, had notice
of this accession to his estate, and died soon after without having altered
or republished his will. And the question was whether the slaves which
descended to him, after making the will, should pass by the will or
not?..... Wythe for plaintiffs.. Pendelton for defendants. It was decreed
the new acquired slaves did not pass under the will.

Not being mentioned in a will is not proof there is no relationship. My
gr.gr.grandfather's settlement of his intestate account left out 2 sons...with
their consent. They were wealthy, the rest of the family was poor, they had
no need, the rest of the family did.
Sometimes the elder children received their portion before the will was
written. Sometimes the elders were angry at a child's choice of marriage
partner or occupation.
Sometimes the elders had no idea where a child was, whether alive or dead, or
whether engaged in some nefarious schemes.
Sometimes the child was in a religous institution that discouraged possessions
or would absorb the estate--nuns, monks, priests.
There are too many reasons for a child to not be listed to accept his absence
from a will as proof he was not a natural child.

Wrong William Carr, William Carr d. 1760 m. Susannah (some say Brooks) is
not the father of Gideon Carr. William Carr son of Thomas Carr & Mary, is
probably the William this William Father of Gideon d. 1711. He Maybe Fther
of William d. 1760.
The fact that William Carr d. 1760 m. Susannah did not have a Gideon Carr
is a proven fact by the Court case as to the estate of William CARR d.
1760. This William is son of CARR (given name unproven) & (given name
unproven) CHILES sister of Walter Chiles d. 1760.

Nanon Carr is deceased, but I found a lot of her files in the
Mid-Continent Public Library in Independence, MO. The files are kept
by surname in a file cabinet. This library has a wonderful
genealogical collection--plus, I'm sure the staff would be willing to
help you.

We have a large family in Jackson County IN, Carr Township, all revolving
around a John Flavel Carr. Will dig it out of the Carr Archives (my hard
files) if anyone is interested. We have been unable to connect; altho all our
names, dates and places seem to connect -- we have not.

John--
I have the following correspondence on your line. (see below)
Looks like your Carrs trace back to Ireland at one end and blend into other
surnames after a couple of daughter-only branches. The connection back in
Ireland lies waiting!

. . . There is a reference in THE RUDDICK FAMILY IN AMERICA by John W Hanneman
that mentions a Barbara Ann CARR born Jan. 16, 1843 in Bethel, OH, daughter of
Alexander CARR, (County Tax Assessor, 1872-4). Barbara was the granddaughter
of Thomas and Margaret (BUCHANAN) CARR of Carr Twp. Barbara married 3 Mar
1878, Jacob RUDDICK, Jackson Co, Ind.. She was the teacher of his motherless
children. Her father, Allexander CARR died in their home on 27 Jun 1878. If
anyone is interested in this, I can type that whole part for you.
Thanks, Grace
JACOB CARR b. about 1775 maybe Salisbury, Essex Co, Mass
Lived in Chesterville, Franklin Co, Maine
Lived in Phillips, Franklin Co, Maine
HELP....I HAVE HIT A BRICK WALL
I hate to admit it, but I can't find anyone who looks like he could
be my JACOB CARR b. abt. 1775, so far. Does anyone have anything on
this Jacob, his ancestors, siblings, or descendants? I would REALLY be
greatful if you did.
I know my JACOB CARR was in Chesterville, Maine between 1794 to
1808 because that is where all his kids were born. He was married to an
Anna. Someone told me they thought her last name might be Brown. This
person also said he thought they were from Salisbury, MA.
In 1831 JACOB and sons DANIEL b 1804, and OSGOOD b 1808 were all
listed on the New Berlin, (now Phillips), Franklin Co, Maine voter list.
In 1879-1880 EUGENE CARR (Osgood's son and Jacob's grandson) was a
black smith in Phillips, Maine.
So I know they existed at one point. Now Jacob must have been
hatched under a cabbage leaf and then joined the witness protection
program late in life!! However, I have a strong feeling he is connected
to the Edson Carr line because of the names he used for his kids:
JOANNE b 1794, JOHN b 1796, NANCY b 1798, SALLY b 1801,
DANIEL b 1804 (Daniel is my line), JOSEPH b 1806, and OSGOOD b b 1808.
They are all Edson Carr family repeats. Also JACOB'S daughter NANCY
reused some of the Carr family names. I just can't figure out where he
fits in. He may have been omitted in someone's list of childred.
