Hello Carr cousins,
I'm Mark Freeman - I've been "off-list" for about six months, and have just
come back "on-list." I have been fortunate and have had quite a few cousins
send me stuff on my distant Carr cousins, and I have a page at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8415/carr.html
This page is William Austin Carr (1763) and Henry Alexander Carr (1787) of
Bibb Co., GA and Early Co., GA, whose ancestors were said to have been in
North Carolina, and whose immigrant was said to have been Patrick Carr from
Ireland - this was said by an uncle who was born in 1830-something. (Uncle
Tobe Carr).
Last month I heard from a cousin who indicated that William A. Carr's father
was Joseph, and that he was from Randolph Co., NC (which was earlier part of
Guilford Co.). Since I had not seen anything on a Joseph from Guilford, and
since the only Joseph descending from the only Patrick I am aware of was too
young to be his father, I chose not to add a Joseph to my family.
Yesterday I received deed extracts from Jones Co., GA which appear to be my
family. Though I do not have proof, I am asking you for help. Here is the
extract:
Deeds from Jones Co., GA - Deed Book B, abstracted by Mrs. Virginia Terry and
Mrs. Nancy Watson:
23 Nov 1809 Joseph Carr of Hancock Co., GA to John Williams of Chatham
Co., NC for $1,000, 202 1/2 acres, lot #64 in the 11th District of Baldwin now
Jones on the waters of Walnut Creek. Signed: Joseph Carr. Wit: John
McCulloh, Wm. Carr. Hancock Co., William Carr swore to the deed before Alexr.
Bellamy J.P.
23 Nov 1809 Joseph Carr of Hancock co., GA to William Carr of Randolph
Co., NC for $1000, 202 1/2 acres, lot #71 in the 11th District of Baldwin now
Jones on the waters of Walnut Creek granted Isom Holloway of Armors District,
Greene Co. Signed: Joseph Carr. Wit: John McCulloh, Rolley Spinks. Ga.
Hancock Co., Rolley Spinks swore to the deed before Alexr. Bellamy J.P.
5 Dec 1809 William Carr of Randolph Co., NC and Benjamin Sanford of
Hancock Co., GA, executors of the estate of Joseph Carr dec. of Hancock Co.,
GA to Robert Carr of Hancock Co. for $600, 202 1/2 acres, lot #59 in the 11th
District of Jones. Signed: Wm. Carr, B. Sanford. Wit: Rolley Spinks, Henry
Carr, Alexr. Bellamy J.P.
5 Dec 1809 Benjamin Sanford of Hancock Co. Executor to the estate of
Joseph Carr of Hancock Co., dec., to William Carr of Randolph Co., NC for
$600, 101 1/4 acres, 1/2 lot #63 being the place that Joseph Catchings sold to
Joseph Carr, Sr. drawn by Kezia Armstrong. Signed: B. Sanford. Wit: Rolley
Spinks, Henry Carr, Alexr. Bellamy J.P.
5 Dec 1809 William Carr of Randolph Co., NC with Benjamin Sanford of
Hancock Co. to Rolley Spinks of Randolph Co. NC for $600, 202 1/2 acres, in
the 19th District of Baldwin now Morgan drawn by Joseph Carr, Sr. bounded NE
by lot #8, NW by District 20, SE by lot #6, SW by lot #26. Signed: Wm. Carr,
B. Sanford. Wit: Henry Carr, Robert Carr, Alexr. Bellamy, J.P.
SO: The names, which APPEAR to be related (again, no proof) are:
Joseph Sr., indicating a Joseph Jr.
Henry
William
Robert
And then there is the page from an unknown book, titled "Family Heads 1805
Georgia" which includes this information:
Carr, John, Wilkes Cty. D 1825 in SC w. Virginia Hawkins, d/o Benjamin
Hawkins
Carr, Robert, Hancock Cty, shows d 1803 w. Elizabeth Vassar? and Ann Holloman?
Carr, Robert, Wilkes Cty., Moved to Jones s/o Robert
Interpreting that, I see a John from Wilkes who may be "close to" a Robert.
Though John Carr did NOT marry Virginia Hawkins, as my ancestor William Austin
Carr Jr. did when she was 14 (coincidentally 1825), and I would be surprised
to learn she earlier married John Carr who died the same year (??), the fact
is somebody, somewhere thought that this was a familiy that was close to my
Hawkins.
I also am aware that there were two generations of Robert. I am also aware
that Benjamin Hawkins, Indian Agent, spoke of a Thomas Carr occasionally in
his volumnous writings.
I am also aware that a family which descends from the VA branch, with Dabney
Carr a common name, resided in Columbia Co. (Thomas Carr, son William Anthony
Carr), and that family is NOT NOT NOT to be confused with my William Austin
Carr, no matter how much better that family is documented! I suggest, but do
not know, that it was THIS William Anthony Carr that was a state legislator.
I would appreciate all cousins having Carr relationships, or knowledge of Carr
family members residing in Georgia from 1800-1840 to let me know what they
know, so I can eliminate some of these possibilities, possibly.
Also, if you are aware of the Randolph, Guilford, and Bertie Co. Carr
families, please let me know what you know.
One other possibility: That the branch that went to Duplin Co., NC and / or
Sampson Co. is related to the Bertie / Guilford branch (I have "proof" that
the Samson / Sampson Co. NC bunch also went to Yalbousha Co., MS, where their
presumed cousins, my branch of William Austin Carr also went in the 1830's.)
In Yalobusha County, MS - both branches of Carrs lived fairly close to each
other (7 miles) and each branch had a person who married a member of the the
Pearson family , who lived adjacent to the Samson Co., NC branch after it
moved.
I look forward to hearing from the group. Thanks in advance,
Cousin Mark

Do you know Thomas Carr born in Ireland, came to Virginia and Tennessee?
Served in Virginia Militia in 1781; married Ann Gates in 1787. Who were his

I was so excited to see your web page! My family has been trying for years
to research our background, but have been unable to get any further back than
two or three generations. I'm hoping we can piece together some of our
history with your infomation.
Is there anyway I can get a copy of your list of names, other than
downloading it? I was also wondering about adding my family, what we know,
anyway. Also, I wonder if you have any tips for us about narrowing down our
search?
I know, I have a LOT of questions. I appreciate your taking the time to read
this. And I really appreciate the web page!
Thanks

I recommend subscribing to the Carr List from Rootsweb.com. We regularly see
postings from researchers looking into Carr, Kerr, Karr, etc. Assemble some
of your information, post a summary and ask for the help you need. You might
find someone in the group doing research on your line. You will definitely
find people searching for Karrs.
If you'd like your information included in the database, you can send me a
GEDCOM file or a FTM file or type the details out in an email. I don't go too
far from the Carr/Kerr/Karr surname, so narrow your focus if you want to save
some time.
Glad you liked my FTM site. If you have specific questions about individuals,
send me questions. I have copies of email correspondence associated with much
of my information, so I can often refer you to other researchers. Karr isn't
my main interest, but I collect the data because of the interconnections.

Arthur Carr's "The Carr Book" (1947) expanded on Edson Carr's "Carr Family
Records" (1894) by providing a date of marriage for these two: 1772. Neither
provided date or place of birth nor date or place of death for Abigail (Very)
Carr. Arthur, as usual, provided no source information for the marriage date.
Both books said there was a son Caleb born 6 Aug 1778, and two children
estimated to have been born before Caleb, so 1772 fits better than 1787 with
that in mind. Source information is lacking however, so take it for what it's
worth - guidance.

Thomas Carr was born in Ireland and came to this country when only a child of
two years of age in company with his brother John and sister Hannah. Their
parents both died on their passage, and were consigned to the waters of the
Atlantic ocean. The children were landed at Annapolis, Md, and kind friends
took them in charge and brought them up. Thomas lived in Maryland, where he
married and raised a family, but moved to Pennsylvania before all of his
children were born. Carr Family Records, Edson Carr, pg 76.

Pat,
My ancestor John Carr (He began his will with John Kerr, but signed as John
Carr) arrived in Annapolis, Maryland with a brother and sister after their
journey from Ireland. His parents died at sea during the voyage.
He married Elizabeth Cross and eventually moved to Fayette County,
Pennsylvania. Several of his sons left PA and went to KY then IN (Clark
County). They apparently travelled with many of the COOMBS family. Two Carr
brothers married Coombs girls.
I suspect that John Carr, b. 1720 was from the Ulster District in Ireland, but
have no proof of this. My research has not progresses any further back in
time.
I hope this answers your question! If we have common interests perhaps we can
help one another.

Hi, again, everyone,
I've forgotten if I have sent this URL along before - it's for "GenForum",
which has over 10,000 lists of surnames, etc., including this one for CARR,
which has at least 30 Carr queries:

I've just posted my search... enjoy! (Thanks to my on-line friend Ed

Researching John Henry CARR
Hi Carr List!
I guess I've lurked long enough. Now that I'm seeing some
New England Carr activity on the list, I will throw my query
out for you kind assistance!
Looking for The ancestry of the Abigail Very (b. ca. 1748),
who married Caleb Carr (b. 19 JUN 1744, W. Greenwich, RI) in
1787, in Stephenstown, Rensselaer, NY!
I have that she was the daughter of Samuel Very and Susannah
Page, Samuel being the son of John Very and Hannah Nurse
(all of Salem, MA), but would like some other
comments/opinions on this if you would!
Has anyone been looking into the Carrs that went to
Rensselaer County, NY?
Thanks

While in NH this summer, I stopped at the Chester Public Library and
copies excerpts from a number of local histories, among them the
"History of Old Chester from 1719-1869," by Benjamin Chase (pub by
authory 1869). There are two pages (#s 483 & 484) of info about the
family dating from 1725 property records for John Karr, mill owner, and
his wife, Mary. They sold property in 1743 and prob moved to
Londonderry, NH. His estate was divided in 1769: John (dec), Hugh, Ann
Moore (wife of James Moore), Mary Karr and Margaret Karr. Apparently
there is anecdotal evidence suggesting that this John was abducted by
Indians in 1724.
There is also info about "another John Karr or Ker who was in Ireland in
1736, as appears by a certificate in possession of his great grandson,
Nathan Carr, of Candia (NH)."
The information about these gentlemen is a bit confusing, but there's
some good information I'm sure and I'll be happy to send copies to
anyone who sends me a snail mail address.
Cheers,
Ellen
