Dear Group,
I am searching for clues in the Carr lines which will assist me with my
other lines. Please take time to "inspect" the surnames in my signature.
If you have any Carr marriages to any of these surnames in VIRGINIA between
ca 1750 to ca 1850 would you please let me know. And the other surname
that seems to "thread" through these lines is COLEMAN.
I do not need an extensive history of the relationships. Just marriage,
date, location, and name of children. No birthdates, nothing fancy.
Thanks for your help and Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Robert Kerr, Sr., married Agnes WAGONER 1786 in what is now Green Co., Tn.
This was Robert's 2nd marriage. Does anyone have anything at all on his
first marriage? Her first name may have been Martha. Any help or

William Carr's will was proven in Spotsylvania county on August 12, 1760,
naming wife Sussannah and children Sarah Carr (married Mordecai Hord),
Thomas Carr, William Carr, Ann Carr, Elizabeth Carr, Phebe Carr, Walter Chiles
Carr, Charles Brooks Carr, Agnes Brooks Carr, Susannah Carr, Mary Carr.
William was the son of "the Immigrant" Thomas Carr, and the brother of
Major Thomas Carr.
In Spotsylvania County, June 3 1783, Lodowick O'Neal and his wife Susannah
conveyed to their son-in-law John Rogers 630 acres where they lived and 11
slaves in trust, and the notes I have say: "3 slaves for use of Susannah
during her life then afterwards for the benefit of those claiming under the
will of Capt. William Carr, dec'd, then slaves for use of said Lodowick,
his heirs forever."
Was Susannah O'Neal the daughter of William Carr?
I'm told that Agnes Brooks Carr married a William Ellis. Is there any
connection to the William Ellis, will probated Spotsylvania County Aug 4
1766 naming wife Elizabeth and children: Hezekiah, William, John, Agnes,
Elizabeth Ellis Hawkins and Ann Ellis O'Neal.
Could William Carr's daughter Elizabeth also have been married to the same
William Ellis as Carr's daughter Agnes?
William Ellis's daughter Ann was married to Robert O'Neal. I believe
Robert O'Neal was the son of the Lodowick O'Neal mentioned above.
Any information appreciated.

Hi all, I learned from the Carr list that Ann Carr born in 1690 who married
to Samuel Overton either belongs to the older Thomas Carr born in 1658, who
married to Mary Garland, or does not belong at all.
I think she was Ann Carr and did belong to Thomas above, as the birthdate
fits well, and the Overton and Carrs intermarried at other times also. The
original record for this was in the Lee County, NC library. It had the year
of birth for Ann Carr as 1690 on this record.
I have nothing more on this and I wonder if someone can give me additional
information to either confirm or deny this linkage? Thnaks before hand. Ken

Hello, John;
Yes, I understand. However, ask yourself if you posted your data and
how often. The CARR list is a fairly large list, but, I would not protest if
you wanted to put all vital information about one CARR in your files, added
a really good subject line and sent it in every two weeks.
Think about it.

Carr Liggett Advertising
Subj: New Ownership, Management Changes Announced at Liggett-Stashower
Date: 97-11-24 17:04:57 EST
From: AOL News

New Ownership, Management Changes Announced at Liggett-Stashower
CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1997--Liggett-Stashower Inc., the
Cleveland-based marketing communications firm, today announced a management
transition and the formation of a new ownership group. . . .
In making the announcement, Foltz emphasized that the transition is
expected to be very smooth with senior management remaining in advisory
roles. "The well-orchestrated transition is part of a natural succession
process that has been in the planning stages for nearly two years," says
Foltz. "Both predecessor agencies -- Lang, Fisher & Stashower and Carr
Liggett -- have followed this transition plan successfully. It has always
been our plan that this is how the transition at Liggett-Stashower would
take place," says Foltz. "Most importantly, we want the changes to be
transparent to our clients." . . .
Foltz has been president and COO of Liggett-Stashower since 1991. He
joined Lang, Fisher & Stashower as an account executive in 1971 after six
years on the faculty of John Carroll University. He became executive vice
president and account group supervisor when the agency merged with Carr
Liggett Advertising in 1987 to form Liggett-Stashower.
McGovern joined Carr Liggett Advertising in 1966 and, after four years
as advertising manager at Bendix Corp., returned to Carr Liggett in 1978.
He became director of client service in 1983 and was director of operations
at the time of the merger with Lang, Fisher & Stashower in 1987.
Most members of the new ownership group have been with the company since
it was formed in 1987 -- the result of the merger of Lang, Fisher &
Stashower and Carr Liggett. Collectively, the group has more than 200 years
of service at Liggett-Stashower and its predecessor agencies. . . .
Liggett-Stashower Inc. is one of the largest integrated marketing
communications companies in Ohio, with 140 employees and capitalized
billings in excess of $76 million. Of the 140 employees, 30 percent have
been with the agency for more than 10 years. Liggett-Stashower builds a
lifetime of customer value by developing relationships between its 70
consumer and business-to-business clients and their customers through public
relations, direct marketing, interactive media and media advertising.

Dear Margaret,
Thank you for your response but as of now we cannot make any connections.
Perhaps in Donegal there is one but so far we have very little info other
than their names (James CARR and Jane DOUGHERTY). We do know a great deal
about their son Mark. Perhaps someone out there will be able to help us.
Will forward to CARR Roots.

Hi there! Read your post to Carr Rootsweb with interest as I also hail from
a Carr line from Donegal, Ireland. From the time frames, I would guess that
my gggrandfather (maybe one more "g") was born about the same time as your
James. Do you possibly have any information on a Solomon Carr who was born
about 1804 and immigrated to North America (Canada) in 1842? It would be
tremendous if you did, but I've learned not to hope for miracles.
Please let me know.
Thanks.

Hi, all. Just found this list and am looking for any information about a
Margeret CARR of Prince Edward Island, Canada. She married Joseph McAleer
and they gave birth to my maternal grandmother on 8 Dec 1882.
About all I know is that Margeret was b. 6 May 1854, and her husband was
born 13 Mar 1851. My grandmother was b. in Hope River PEI, so the family
must have lived there for at least a while.
Thanks for any help!

Searching for my ancestor, Sarah Ann CARR who was born about 1843/44 in
Canada and married George W. MEACHAM on March 27, 1859. Her age is
listed as 16 years old. She died between 1880 and 1889. Her sister
Lucy M.CARR was born January 5, 1854 and died of Typhoid on October 7,
1890. There was also a William CARR, born about 1850, who was, I
believe, their brother. Another sister, Lydia CARR married William
BIGELOW - all these marriages took place in Colombia, Van Buren County,
Michigan.
Their parents are listed as Jason and Sabra CARR (CARROLL).
P-L-E-A-S-E.... any information is appreciated. I can't seem to find a
connection to this family.

On May 16, 1995, Lloyd Carr was given the helm of Michigan football program
as U of M's 17th Head Coach. Carr began his coaching tenure at Michigan in
dramatic fashion with a win over Virginia as time ran out in the Pigskin
Classic, 18-17. It was the greatest comeback in 'M' history as the Wolverines
had trailed 17-0 with less than 12 minutes left in the game. The crowning
achievement of his first season was the 31-23 win over second-ranked Ohio
State in the final game of the regular season. Michigan tied for third place
in the Big Ten.
Lloyd Carr joined the Wolverines in 1980. Carr served as Michigan's defensive
secondary coach (1980-1986), defensive coordinator (1987-1994) and assistant
head coach (1990-1994). Lloyd Carr once said he had the greatest assisting
coaching job in the country at The University of Michigan. Carr now has one
of the best head coaching jobs in the country. As Michigan's 17th head coach,
Carr led the Wolverines to a 9-4 record and a trip to the Alama Bowl
(Michigan's 21st consecutive post season bowl berth).

Not only is Penn State favored to win the Big Ten Conference, the
Nittany Lions find themselves ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason
poll.
Yet when coach Joe Paterno is asked about the expectations, he simply
shrugs.
``Whether or not we should be favored in this conference doesn't
impress me,'' Paterno said, ``and it doesn't make me despondent, either.
``It's nice to have people looking at you, but I have no idea whether
we should be picked first or sixth. There are too many ifs, ands and buts. We
still have too many question marks.''
But not enough to avoid being chosen over Rose Bowl champion Ohio State
as the team to beat in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes were picked second and
Michigan third. Penn State, meanwhile, starts the
season No. 1 for the first time in its history. . . .
Five other Big Ten teams - Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and
Michigan State - are ranked in the Top 25, so it won't be easy getting
through the season without a loss. And then there's unranked Northwestern,
coming off a co-Big Ten title.
For the four schools with new coaches - Illinois (Ron Turner), Indiana
(Cam Cameron), Minnesota (Glen Mason) and Purdue (Joe Tiller) - any
conference win will be cherished. . . .
``With all the rivalries, and all the intensity and all the great
players in the Big Ten, it's difficult to get through the season unscathed,''
said Michigan coach Lloyd Carr.
He should know. For two straight years, the Wolverines ended rival Ohio
State's national title hopes by beating undefeated Buckeye teams. In '96, it
was Michigan 13, Ohio State 9, at the Horseshoe in Columbus. . . .

Here they go again.
Colorado returns to the scene of one of the most dramatic finishes in
college football when the No. 8 Buffaloes play No. 14 Michigan in front of
106,000 at Michigan Stadium on Saturday.
In 1994, Kordell Stewart threw a last-play, 64-yard touchdown pass
caught by Michael Westbrook after it was tipped in the end zone to give the
Buffaloes a 27-26 win.
Last year, at Boulder, Colo., the Buffs were in a similar situation.
With Michigan ahead 20-13 and five seconds left, Colorado was at the Michigan
37. Koy Detmer's pass into the end zone was tipped away by Chuck Winters just
as the Buffs' Rae Carruth looked as if he would make a diving catch.
``It has certainly been a game to talk about over the last few
seasons,'' Buffaloes coach Rick Neuheisel said. ``Both games have come down
to the last play, and when that happens, it usually makes for great drama.''
Last week, Colorado turned aside Colorado State, while Michigan becomes
the last Division I-A team to open the season. And the Wolverines will do so
with Brian Griese at quarterback.
Griese, the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese, beat out Scott
Dreisbach, who started 11 games last season. Griese took over for Dreisbach
and led Michigan's 13-9 comeback win over Ohio State last season.
``I think his decision-making has improved, and I think he has shown
great leadership skills,'' Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said of Griese.
With each team coming away with a win, this will be a sort of rubber
match, since the series has not been continued.
In a short time, Colorado-Michigan has turned into a can't-miss game.
``Everywhere I went this summer, it's amazing how many people want to
talk about that game, even though we have some other rivalries around here,''
Carr said.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - John Hessler started this season as one of the
top passers in Colorado history, yet he struggled early in last week's
opener.
Opening game jitters? Maybe.
The No. 8 Buffalos rallied from a 14-7 halftime deficit to beat
Colorado State 31-21, as Hessler threw two touchdown passes in a span of
8:07.
Now, it's time for Michigan's Brian Griese to go through his opening
game jitters. Coach Lloyd Carr can only hope Griese comes through as well as
Hessler did when the 14th-ranked Wolverines entertain Colorado Saturday.
Carr didn't announce his quarterback until Tuesday. The job was
supposed to be a tossup between Griese and Scott Dreisbach. But Carr
indicated that sophomore Tom Brady and redshirt freshman Jason
Kapsner also figured into the competition.
Griese, a fifth-year senior, is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Bob
Griese. He has been a backup for most of his time at Michigan. But he looked
good lifting Michigan to a season-ending upset at Ohio
State last season, and Carr also liked the way Griese played in the Outback
Bowl loss to Alabama.
``Brian has had an excellent fall,'' Carr said. ``He's respected highly
by his teammates. He throws the ball well. He makes good decisions, and he
understands the mark of a good quarterback is getting your team into the end
zone, and being able to direct them late in the game when you need to win.''
Certainly, that has been the key to the last two games in this brief
rivalry.
The Wolverines won the inaugural meeting 31-0 in 1974. The series
resumed 20 years later and Colorado earned a 27-26 win when Michael Westbrook
caught Kordell Stewart's touchdown pass as time
expired. Last year, Michigan preserved a 20-13 victory at Boulder by knocking
down a pass in the end zone on the final play.
``I'd love for it to go down to the last play again,'' Carr said. ``But
I hope we're on defense.''
Griese has thrown for 2,090 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions
in two seasons. He was 5-4 as a starter in 1995 after replacing Dreisbach,
whose season was ended by a thumb injury.
``His decision-making has improved, and he's worked hard at his
leadership skills,'' Carr said. ``There's no question he'll do a good job for
us.''
Hessler completed 18-of-23 for 223 yards, with the two touchdowns and
one interception last week. The Buffalos also had 122 yards on the ground.
Colorado coach Rick Neuheisel, a former quarterback, has spent considerable
time working with Hessler this week.
``I would say John Hessler can improve measurably,'' Neuheisel said.
``There was no question that he was a very shaky performer a lot of the game.
I can't tell you why he was shaky. Maybe I thought
that two years was experience enough and he would come in like an old
veteran.''
Hessler came into the season ranked ninth on Colorado's all-time list
in passing yards with 2,310. He also was fifth in touchdown passes with 20,
and 21st in total offense with 2,298 yards.
``Talking to him, I remembered he had never started a season opener,''
Neuheisel said. ``Maybe it was more of a new experience for him than I had
thought.''
All the more reason why Carr is hoping Griese can get off to a smooth
start.
``Brian won't have anybody looking over his shoulder,'' Carr said. ``I
don't want a guy to feel if he makes a bad throw or a mistake that he's
coming out. Yet there's a truth there that his status is going to be marked
by performance.''

North Carolina and Michigan don't need to be reminded that Virginia and
Notre Dame are dangerous teams. . . .
Michigan, also a 14-point favorite Saturday, remembers Notre Dame's
last visit to Ann Arbor in 1993. The Wolverines were ranked No. 3 and again a
double-digit favorite against the Irish.
Notre Dame won that game 27-23, sending the Wolverines into a tailspin
which they haven't recovered from yet. That was the first of four losses for
Michigan in 1993 - the first of four consecutive
four-loss seasons for the Wolverines.
Despite Notre Dame's early-season struggles this year, an uninspiring
win against Georgia Tech and consecutive losses to Purdue and Michigan State,
No. 6 Michigan (2-0) is still worried.
``Notre Dame is a program of tradition,'' Michigan coach Lloyd Carr
said. ``It is a program of players that have great pride in what they do, and
they're going to come in here and play their best game. I have no doubt of
that.''
The Irish will have to do more than play their best game. They will
have to stop a Michigan running game that ran for 344 yards last week against
Baylor and score against a Wolverines defense that has not allowed a
touchdown this season. . . .

There's now just one No. 1 team in college football.
Michigan, No. 1 in The Associated Press media poll, beat Ohio
State 20-14 Saturday to complete its first perfect regular season
since 1971 and earn its first Rose Bowl berth since 1992.
Florida State, No. 1 in the coaches' poll, had its perfect
season spoiled by Florida 32-29.
Although Nebraska is also undefeated and ranked third in both
polls, Michigan now is in clear control of the national title race.
Every No. 1 team that has won its bowl game has also won the
national championship.
``For us, it's a dream season,'' said Michigan coach Lloyd Carr,
whose team will play No. 11 Washington State in Pasadena, Calif.
``We never played when we didn't play hard. The chemistry has been
really tremendous among these kids.''
Michigan's Charles Woodson bolstered his bid to become the first
defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy with a spectacular
performance against No. 4 Ohio State at Ann Arbor, Mich.
Woodson, a cornerback who also returns kicks and is a part-time
wide receiver, scored on a 78-yard punt return, set up another
touchdown with a 37-yard catch and halted an Ohio State scoring
threat with an end zone interception.
``He took over the game,'' said Ohio State receiver David
Boston, who had boasted that the Buckeyes would win easily.

I have a copy of the will of the Thomas French mentioned below... though
he and Esther were childless there are other Frenchs mentioned. Could
did out and post if wanted.
Samuel and Patience are my gg-grandparents and a couple of years ago I
did the research to have them added to First Families of Ohio. I have
about four other letters from Samuel and Patience back to family in NJ
if your are interested in them... up to about 1819 when Samuel describes
building a 28' square brick house for his family. This house is still
standing near Damascus, Ohio, almost 170 years later!

These letters were written by Samuel and Patience (Thomas) Carr to his
parents, Samuel and Ann (French) Carr, of Mt. Holly, New Jersey. Esther
Brantingham McQuilkin of Sebring. OH copied them.
Ohio 2nd month 9th1815
(February 9, 1815)
Dear Parents-
I may inform you that I received your kind letter by the hand of
Thomas Warrington which was very satisfactory to me to hear you were
enjoying good health.
I may inform you that I received your letter at a time when I wanted to
hear from you very bad. It was the day after our marriage. We were
married the 7th of the 2nd month and the next day we went to cousin
Thomas again. We let them know of it the morning before & it was very
trying to them for they thought we had given way too early to
discouragement. But since it is so, they wished us not to shun them; but
come home again & they would make things as comfortable as they could
which we are very thankful for. And we do expect to stay there until
after sugar making when we do expect to go to housekeeping. That will be
about the last of 3rd month.
I received the money which thee sent me which is very acceptable.
I may inform you that we are well in health & I do believe we wish to
do what is right. But we are all liable to miss, there fore we wish the
advice of our friends. Yours & Thomas & Esther's in particular & I am in
hopes that our future conduct will make up for the past.
So in much love we conclude & remain your children-
Samuel Carr
Patience Carr
Give our love to brothers & sisters, uncles & aunts & all inquiring
friends.
(continuation of same letter)
I thought I could do no less than add a few lines (to cousin Samuels
letter) in address to my dear uncle & aunt who feel doubly so to me at
the present time; which has been a very trying one to me & my dear
Esther. I doubt not that you will be sympathizers with us. Those who are
parents, I believe can only feel with us. The dissapointment has been
great. We were pleasing ourselves with the idea that all was going well
when to our great surprise Patience informed us that the day had arrived
that they were to accomplish their intentions. The place appointed where
they & the rsyp (sic) were to meet with the other company. I say you are
the only ones that can judge of our feeling at that time-too late for
any remedy.
I told Patience just before they left the house (but not before I had
seriously considered their situation) that I would rather they would
return. Feeling something within to say that all was not done yet, but
receive them & still continue our case tenderly toward them as children
who while I am writing feel dear to my best feelings.
I hope you will consider their situation at this time, place as it were
remote from many things that they will stand in need of, or at least
where things are very dear at this time & many scarcely to be had at any
price.
Our love unitedly to you both.
Thomas French
Dianne's notes:
Samuel Carr, born March 24, 1788, at Mt. Holly, New Jersey, to Samuel

after he married Patience.

Brownsville 9th month 18th 1815
(September 18, 1815)
My Dear Companion-
I may inform thee that we are at Elisha Hunts and they are all well. We
have been favored to get along very well for the most of our journey. I
have had my health very well. I believe as well as any one of the
others, for it did not tire me to ride forty or forty five miles a day
which we did several times. The mare stood it very well.
We came to Brownsville yesterday and then we found Caleb and his wife
and Debbie Ann at her fathers. They were all well. Caleb went with me to
Jonas Cattells for dinner and staid the most of the afternoon and then
left to go home. He wanted me to go home with him, but it was so far
back that I thought it would be best to go on to the state of Ohio, and
to leave the visit to him till we returned.
To return a little to our journey. We were very much favored as to
having to ride in the rain, for we never had the occasion of putting on
our great coats but once till we got to Redstone & then not half an
hour.
Dear Companion although I am looking forward toward the Ohio my mind is
often turned to view you and to put my feeble petition for you & for my
preservation. And dear children- one & all of you- endeavor to encourage
one another to love & harmony. Now I must draw near the close of my
letter. We talk of starting for Ohio tomorrow. So in the love that ever
lives, & ever I trust will exist, I must conclude with my kind love to
my dear children.
