Hello,
This will be the first in a short series of e-mails with basic
information project members and those considering Genetic Genealogy
should have.
This first e-mail will lay out our project goals and other project
information. Future e-mails will lay out the basics for DNA Genealogy,
DNA test options, result interpretation and what your results tell you.
These e-mails will remain in the Carr-DNA archives for future
reference and for new members who join the project.
Project goals - Identify common paternal ancestry within the many Carr
and phonetically similar surnamed families around the world today using
Y Chromosome DNA. Establish a central database of YDNA haplotypes and
Paternal line pedigrees from Carr surname families, including all
phonetic variations, from around the world. Maintain a public web
site to provide access to all Carr Family Historians who are interested
in using Y DNA to locate living cousins. Promote DNA Genealogy as a
means to connect Carr families around the world to allow unknown
cousins to expand their genealogies together.
Project participation - The Carr Genetic Genealogy Project is open to
all Carr Surname Family Historians, which includes all surnames for
which Carr is a derivative surname or to which Carr is phonetically
similar. Known surnames that fall into this category include (but are
not limited to):
Related and phonetically similar surnames include - Caer, Car, Carr,
Carrach, Carre', Cear, Cer, Corr, Kaar, Kaare, Kaer, Kar, Kare, Karr,
Karre, Kaurr, Kay, Kear, Kehr, Kehri or Kehrein, Keire, Keor, Ker,
Kere, Kerr, Kerre, Keyr, Kier, Kurr, Mac Giolla Domhnaigh, O'Carraigh,
O'Ceardain
Participation includes submittal of a YDNA haplotype from a male with
the Carr surname or documented descent along the direct paternal line
(father to son to son ...). Men and women may participate in the
project, but YDNA results from a male Carr is required for paternal
line genealogy. Submittal of paternal line ancestry is also required
since this is a Carr genealogy project. Establishing meaningful links
between Carr male lines requires both a YDNA haplotype and a paternal
line pedigree.
When two Carr males are found to have a meaningful match in their YDNA
haplotype they will be contacted to allow them to search for their
common ancestors in their family histories. Participant haplotypes and
pedigrees will be posted on a public web site so other Carr family
members can find connections to project members. Participants may
choose to not reveal their haplotypes and pedigree on the public web
site, but this will limit the usefulness of the project in meeting
their family history goals.
Participation can also include posting your Carr family pedigree on the
Carr Family web site. This may also provide a means for cousins to
find each other, but the primary focus of this project will be
establishing recent common ancestry through YDNA.
Responsibilities - participants need to acquire a YDNA haplotype for
their male Carr line. This may be done through any one of many
companies that perform genealogy DNA tests. Family Tree DNA and DNA
Heritage are linked to this project. Other test options and testing
companies are available through the world wide web. Future e-mails in
this series will cover test options.
Participants should keep their information current, which means
informing the project administrator of new developments in their family
history and changes in e-mail addys. Providing e-mail address updates
is important so you can be informed of project information. The Carr
Family DNA web site has forms that make the submittal of family history
and new DNA test results easier. GEDs may be posted to that site as
well.

Donations - Family Tree DNA and DNA Heritage accept donations for the
project. These donations can be used to offset the test cost for Carr
males who find the cost of testing prohibitive but do wish to join the
project or who have an important genealogical connection in their
pedigree, but are not interested in paying for testing themselves. If
you make a donation, please inform the project administrator of any
instructions on the use of the donation you have in mind when making
it.
New members - new members are always welcome and continuously sought.
If you have not yet joined by submitting your DNA, please do so as soon
as you are able. Your participation encourages others to join as well,
which will provide the opportunity for you to find your unknown
cousins.
Recruiting - All project participants are encouraged to locate Carr
families they may share common ancestry with them and tell them of this
opportunity. Covering the test cost may be necessary at times for
reluctant individuals. Success of this Carr Family project will
require participation of as many Carr families as possible. Over
time, the project will grow, more quickly as more people seeing it gain
in size, so if you haven't joined yet, join today and encourage others
who are able to join as well. Carr's live up to the Ferniehirst Carr
motto: Late, but in ernest. Once the cause is clear, all become
enthusiastic.
