Hello,
First let me say welcome to the many new people on the list. This list
has been set up to provide Carr family members (which includes all
phonetic spellings of the surname from all origins) with a means to
communicate with each other concerning our Carr Y DNA. This list is
also used to send out updates about the project to the project members.
Some of you may wonder how your e-mail address was added to this list.
I have entered e-mail addresses of everyone who has joined the project
through testing at the Carr Surname Projects at Family Tree DNA, FTDNA,
(which includes National Geographic's Genographic Project members who
selected to join the Carr Surname group) and DNA Heritage, DNAH. I
have also added e-mail addresses of any Carr, Kerr, etc. surname person
listed in Ysearch or Ybase Y DNA databases. There are also several
people who have expressed an interest in the project, I hope you will
be joining us soon with your Y DNA results. It is to the benefit of
all Carr DNA Project members to encourage other Carrs to test as well.
Post messages to the various genealogy boards and mail lists with
encouragement to others to join in. Many hands working together.
Also, FTDNA has a place on the Carr DNA project page were contributions
can be made to the group general fund so that we can include those who
would join us but find this testing financially challenging.
We now have Y DNA results for 34 Carr families in the Carr Y DNA
database and several more kits on order that we expect to come in soon,
if you are one of those, please send in your kit today. The database
was generated from our FTDNA and DNAH Carr surname projects, the
Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation database, and the public Y DNA
databases, Ysearch and Ybase. When each new new member's results are
received I compare then against our database, both DNA and paternal
lineage to see how closely they match. I also compare them against the
public forensic databases for population studies and then inform the
new member of the results. Establishing links requires a large
database as we have many origins, so it is to each member's benefit to
encourage other Carr's to be tested and join the project. Genealogical
Y DNA results from any source can be included in the project. Other
forms of DNA test results may also be included, but the focus of this
project at this time is paternal line ancestry, Y DNA.
Family Tree DNA now allows their Y DNA clients to list in two separate
surname groups at the same time. If you are listed in the 'Elliott and
Scottish Border Reiver Project' or another Surname/regional project,
but not in the Carr surname project at FTDNA, please request FTDNA to
include you in both projects. Likewise, if you tested with FTDNA and
wish to double list in either the Border Reiver regional surname
project (most likely regional project for those of Scottish background)
or any other second surname/regional project, please contact FTDNA with
your request. Being listed directly in a surname project makes it
easier for the project admin to access your results when he updates the
files. The Border Reiver is an affiliate of this project since many
Kerrs were Border Reivers. The Carr surname has been adopted by people
with many origins, if there is another regional surname group you think
is more appropriate for you, please join them as well.
The Carr surname project has now linked with the Kerr & Carr Family
Genealogy website maintained by James Carr. This site is in part a
resurrection of the Carr Family site maintained by Joseph Carr some
years ago and contains a good deal of information about Carr families,
if you have not visited it, I encourage you to do so. James has created
a great DNA page with links to many sources of information on DNA and
genealogy. Links to our project site have been established on other
Carr websites as well. Feel free to send in any Carr website or other
website URLs you think will benefit and be benefitted by a link to our
project.

There have been several requests from members for the Carr surname
project to post a public chart of the Carr surname Y DNA database so
they can do their own comparisons. James Carr and I have been
assembling a web page for this purpose. Thanks go to Jim for
contributing his website creation skills and hard efforts in supporting
the project. As you can imagine, it is a large task as much
information will be posted and accuracy is important. The site will
list earliest known ancestor, EKA, with a link to the genealogical
information for that person, including a GED if one is provided. Note
that for our purposes, a list or GED starting with the EAK and listing
all of his descendants with places and dates is of greatest use. The
site will of course list the marker alleles, and will include links to
the Ysearch and Ybase databases where members have entered their
information. Most DNA results are downloaded directly from databases
to assure their accuracy. Each member's Haplogroup will be listed, with
an indication of how the Haplogroup was established. No member's
personal identification information will be listed. All contact will
be back through the project to protect our members from spam. I need
to hear from anyone who has reservations about their results being
listed. Each member whose results will be listed will be contacted
individually so they can confirm the ancestral information. You can
save me a bit of effort here if you confirm your paternal line for me
once again now. If you have a personal website we can provide a link
to your site as well.
I apologize for the lengthy e-mail, but there was and is much to
communicate concerning our project. I promise not to make a habit of
long e-mails, but will endeavor to keep you up to date. Please use
this list or contact me directly with any questions, requests or
suggestions you may have. If I have requested information from you
concerning your paternal line and you have not responded, please reply
now. If another member contacts you or I contact you about a close
match with another member, please respond to them.
A note: I have been editing the Carr-DNL mail list this week to add
people and remove old or duplicate addresses, so you may have seen some
activity from this come across your e-mail. The list is an automated
service, so I have no control over those outgoing e-mails, apologies if
this annoyed anyone.

Thank you for being a part of the Carr Surname Genetic Genealogy
Project and your attention. The adventure continues.
