Cheers,
I wanted to let you know that the Carr Famliy DNA Genealogy project is still growing and
we are still matching paternal lines of participants. With over 100 participants in the
project, a lot of the work has to be done by the participants themselves. As
administrator I continue to seek knew participants, spread the word about DNA for
genealogy and this project and correspond with members and others who have an interest in
Carr Family Genealogy. I have accounts on all of the major DNA for Genealogy testing
companies so that I can monitor and contact Carr families who take a YSTR DNA test and see
if they are a possible match to your Carr paternal line. Collaboration between
participants and other Carr family researchers continues to expand our project and provide
more contacts. I thank you all for your assistance, it benefits all of us.
FTDNA has announced a new type of DNA test to assist family historians with their search.
This test uses the 22 chromosomes not already tested by FTDNA. This test is similar to
family heritage DNA tests performed by 23andme and Decodeme. FTDNA has their own focus on
these tests, one that is aimed more directly at Family history research. We have one
participant who joined the beta test group, his results will be available in May. Many
other FTDNA customers who joined the beta test group have already obtained their results,
you can read about their experiences on the ISOGG list or on the Rootsweb Genealogy-DNA
list. I will paste FTDNA's description of the test and the offer they are making to
existing FTDNA customers below. I make no endorsement of the Family Finder test since I
have no personal experience with it, though I have taken a similar test through another
vendor and found that test to be interesting. You can read about the Family Finder test
below and on FTDNA!
's website and decide if this is something you wish to do.
April 20, 2010 announcement
"Before we (FTDNA) start our worldwide launch to new customers, we want to allow the
members of your projects to order the Family Finder test during the next 7 days. Members
who place an order during this period will receive first priority. The Family Finder test
is priced at $289, and can be ordered from the menu on the left side of your personal
page.
While the Y-DNA matches men with a specific paternal line, and the mtDNA finds potential
relatives only along the maternal line, Family Finder can look for close relationships
along all ancestral lines.
You may now match to male and female cousins from any of your family lines within about
five generations. The science uses linked blocks of DNA across the 22 autosomal
chromosomes and matches them between two people. Our bioinformatics team has worked
extensively to develop the calculations to determine the closeness of the relationship.
The possibilities to find matches abound:
Aunts & Uncles, Parents and Grandparents
Half siblings and 1st cousins
2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins
Possibly 5th cousins. Although that will require some digging!
When you take the Family Finder test, your results are compared against our Family Finder
database. You will be able to:
sort your matches by degree of relationship
view their names and e-mail address for immediate communication
download your raw data
Log in to your FTDNA personal page to read more about Family Finder testing and Projects.
Special Note: The Family Finder test requires an untouched vial of DNA. If your kit does
not have an extra vial on file, we will mail a collection kit for a new DNA extraction.
After ordering you will be notified by email whether we are able to use a stored vial or
will be mailing a new collection kit."
May you find the next generation back in your genealogy. Please continue the wonderful
support, our combined efforts make this project work.

YSTR DNA results from any DNA for genealogy test company can be compared for genealogy
purposes. YSTR DNA tests are only useable for paternal line genealogy.
