The following obituary was posted by Rena Worthen. I am looking for
additional information of the mentioned two sons and two daughters.
W. R. Carper was married twice, first to Virginia Buhrman and second on 17
Oct 1895 to Anne McFerran Woltz. There were no children by the second marriage
and I don't have any information on children of the first marriage other than
the mention below. Does anyone have their names or dates?
Wyndham Randolph Carper was one of seven children born to Joseph VanMeter
Carper 1812-1864 and Anna Maria Grymes West. Joseph was the son of Benjamin
Carper 1778-1855 and Elizabeth VanMeter. Benjamin was the son of Nicholas Carper
and Elizabeth Shrider. Elizabeth Van Meter was the daughter of Isaac VanMeter
1750-1797 and Hester Ann Peck 1760-1835.
The Confederate Veteran

Wyndham Randolph Carper, well known citizen of Botetourt County, died at his
home in Gala, Va on July 26, 1925 after an illness of several months. He was
born November 2, 1840, and was in his 85th year. While a cadet at Virginia
Military Institute, in 1861, he volunteered and went to the front with the
Fincastle Rifles, one of the first units to enter the service from this county. He
served through the four years of war and surrendered with General Lee at
Appomattox. He was wounded three times, twice at Gettysburg, and during one of the
battles around Richmond.
After the surrender, he returned to Botetourt and engaged in farming, and
also filled positions of trust in the county, and for about fourty years was a
member of the county school board. He had been a member of the Presbyterian
church for many years, and was an estimable citizin. He took great interest in the
affairs of the county, and for many years he was reguarded as a leader in
community interests. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters,
also by one sister.
The funeral was held at Galitia Presbyterian Church, attended by one of the
largest assemblages of neighbors and friends known in the community for many
years. The active pallbearers were his nephews. The Julia Jackson Chapter, U. D.
C. placed flags and flowers upon the grave of this beloved Patriot.
