PLATTSBURGH — Urgel R. Carpentier, 91, of Bailey Avenue, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at
the CVPH Medical Center.
He was born in Lacolle, Quebec, on May 31, 1910, the son of Joseph and Georgianna
(Lanciault) Carpentier. His family moved to the United States in 1922 and Urgel later
became a U.S. citizen.
Mr. Carpentier was educated in local Chazy schools and finished with vocational training
in the machine shop at the Chazy Central Rural School, founded by William H. Minor.
His wife of 64 years, the former Helen Baker, died on Jan. 6, 2000.
He worked at the Pal Blade Company, working his way up from machinist to manager of
production. After a brief stint at American Safety Razor in Brooklyn and The Rollar Smith
Company in Bethlehem, Pa., he returned to Plattsburgh and spent the rest of his career
with the Plattsburgh Foundry, now Plattco, where he served as VP of Engineering and VP of
the Plattco Corporation. While there he developed and held patents on several innovative
products, including the "World Renowned" dust valve used originally in the
mining industry and in pollution abatement equipment all over the world.
Urgel was a member of St. Peter’s Church. He was active in the community, serving as past
president of the Lions Club and rose through the chairs to become Leading Knight of the
Elks Lodge. He was the oldest living member of the Plattsburgh Lodge of Elks and a member
since 1947. He also was an avid golfer well into his eighties.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Rich Felak of Niskayuna, N.Y.; one
son, Fred Carpentier of Berwyn, Pa.; three grandchildren, Marcia, Diane and Rick
Carpentier; and one sister, Cecile Deshaies of Canada.
A daughter, Georgianna Carpentier, died in 1961. Six brothers, Ulric, Omer, Marcel,
Arcade, Paul and Emile, also died before him.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with
an Elks ritualistic service at 7:30 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. The funeral will
be held at St. Peter’s Church on Thursday, March 14, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the
spring in the Riverside Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad.
