The will of Andrew Carpenter, 'brewer', 1571, Oxford revealed a surprise. He
left a small behest to a Robert Carpenter of Exeter College (Oxford
University). Long ago I had uncovered Robert's Oxford data with account of
his 'poverty'. Andrew Carpenter was a son of Henry Carpenter of Locking,
thus Robert should be a nephew. Henry Himself had a son Robert who himself
had a son Robert who married a Mary Croxford. Robert of Oxford University
was removed from the rolls due to absence in Ireland in 1579. Andrew seemed
a prosperous enough individual, but it seems others of the family were not
doing well.
By the way many of these Berkshire Carpenters were in the malting business.
Especially the Abingdon area Carpenters.
Berkshire on the whole was a fine brewing area with its streams. The beer
was shipped down the Thames to London.
The Abingdon Carpenters had family members in London who presumably handed
that end.
