Robin,
The Joseph Carpenter who in 1675 contracted with Caleb Carman of Jamaica,
L.I., to build a saw and corn mill there was of Musketa Cove (Daniel Hoogland
Carpenter, HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE CARPENTER FAMILY IN AMERICA [Jamaica,
N.Y., 1901], p. 41, citing Bergen genealogy and Jamaica Town Records). This
identifies him as the son not of William2 of Rehoboth, Mass., but of William1
of Providence, R.I. (see ibid., pp. 31-43).
Rehoboth William's son Joseph was baptized at Shalbourne, Wiltshire, England,
6 April 1634, and was buried at Swansea, Mass. (formed primarily from
Rehoboth in 1667), on 6 May 1675 (see TAG 70[1995]:194, 204; Swansea VR,
A:147). He married at Rehoboth, 25 November (not May) 1655, Margaret Sutton,
daughter of John Sutton of Hingham, Mass., and Rehoboth (Rehoboth VR, 1:44;
Mary Lovering Holman, ANCESTRY OF COLONEL JOHN HARRINGTON STEVENS AND HIS
WIFE FRANCES HELEN MILLER [Concord, N.H., 1948], pp. 269-70). Margaret died
not in 1700 but about 1676: her estate inventory is dated 4 October 1676 and
appears immediately after her husband's will and inventory (Plymouth Colony
Wills, 3:2:33-36 [Joseph], 37-38 [Margaret]).
Children of Joseph3 and Margaret (Sutton) Carpenter (1-4 b. Rehoboth [VR,

BENJAMIN, b. 15 January 1657 (Old Style). 3. ABIGAIL, b. 15 March 1659
(prob. O. S.). 4. 10 March 1661 (prob. O. S.). 5. Perhaps MARTHA, said to
have been born in 1662 (unlikely). 6. JOHN, b. Rehoboth or Swansea ca. 1667
(birth not recorded; claims he was Hannah's twin are unfounded); he (not a
son of Abiah3) died at East Greenwich, R.I., 25 August 1753, in his 87th year
(see Swansea Proprietors' Records, 1:167; Plymouth Colony Wills, 3:2:33;
James N. Arnold, VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND, 1636-1850, 21 vols.
[Providence, 1891-1911], 1:2:107). 7. Hannah, b. 21 of 1st mo (i.e., March)
1671 (uncertain as to whether year is Old or New Style). 8. Solomon, b. 27
April 1673 (d. 16 Oct. 1675). 9. Margaret, b. 4 May 1675.
