I obtained an index of Prerogatory Court of Canterbury wills and found
some very significant items. Most important is a 1526 will for a Henry
Carpenter
in Lokying (Locking) Berkshire not far from Great Coxwell. This is the
earliest
document relating to the Hungerford area Carpenters I have discovered, and I
suspect
the will of William Carpenter of Rehoboth's distant ancestor. He should be
the father of the Thomas
Carpenter of Hungerford in the Oxford University probate documents and
wills (Hidden abstracts).
When I receive a copy I will report.
Others noted are 1. a 1520 will for Thomas Carpenter of Reading.
2. a 1508 will for William Carpenter 'clerk' Kingston-on-Thames.
3. a 1619 will for Thomas Carpenter the elder 'clothier', Taughton,
Somerset.
The Thomas Carpenter in Somerset may be the father of Alexander. We shall
see about that also. The good news is that there are a number of wills for
the early
1500s.
