After a review of the Horley Parish Register the following conclusions were
reached concerning IGI data. A March 23, 1588/9 baptism of Rebeka d. of
William is recorded in the parish register but not in the IGI as a daughter
of a William. This seems the first data concerning a Horley William. No
marriage is recorded. A June 5, 1595 baptism of a Mary d. of William is
recorded. A Feb. 3, 1601/2 baptism for a Thomas is recorded. The IGI has a
William for the father. This is an interpolation, but a reasonable
conclusion. There is no Horley marriage for a William.
A William was born in 1579 but died the same year. Another William was born
in 1584. No burial is recorded or Horley marriage for him. The William
Carpenter who married Anne Robbinson in 1602 is very unlikely to be this b.
1584 William Carpenter. He would have been to young to marry and she was too
old to marry him (b. 1578).
The IGI data that shows a William marrying in Horley on 2 Feb.1591/? is not
in the Horley
Parish Register. There is no break in the register for that year.
William Carpenter of Horley appears in the 1620ish will of his father
Thomas. Clearly a William lived in the parish and continued there well into
the 1600s. The various children, Rebeka, Mary and probably Thomas should all
be his. The Wroxton William Carpenter does not seem a Horley Carpenter. The
dates of his probable son Thomas conflict with the dates of Wroxton William
Carpenter.
