Dear Bruce E.,
I looked at the data you mentioned and it indicates that the William
(Christening: 18 JUL 1604 <Wroxton, Oxford, England>) Carpenter
had a father listed as William Carpenter. This William Carpenter probably
came from or was associated with a nearby town called Horley, also in
Oxford.
See below.
Happy Holidays.

Subject: [CARPENTER] Wroxton data
I sent to England for the parish registers for Wroxton parish,
Oxfordshire.
A William Carpenter was born to a William Carpenter, 18 July 1604.
This is
the only west country record which corresponds with William Carpenter of
Rehoboth. I discovered a few interesting points concerning this data.
Firstly the IGI accounting of this data is full of assumptions and
mistakes.
There was a large Carpenter family in the adjoining parish of
Horley with
at least two Williams. A reading of the Wroxton data has to exclude
them.
The Wroxton William Carpenter was married in the parish 2 Feb. 1601/2. The
wife was Anne Robbinson alias Brewer born 1578. The Robbinsons were and
old
Wroxton family. The father was a Richard. Wroxton William
Carpenter's
first
child was a Jane baptized 24 Oct. 1602. There were many children, two
of
which were named Joseph and Hanna.
The origins of Wroxton William Carpenter cannot be accounted for in the
Wroxton or Horley registers. It seems he came from elsewhere. The William
Carpenter baptized 10 May 1576 should be a prime candidate. This Great
Coxwell William Carpenter also left his parish. This William Carpenter of
Great Coxwell is the only west country William Carpenter whose dates
conform
to the Bevis embarkation. Mr. Zubrinsky's article on the subject
of
Shalbourne Carpenters begins with the mistake that the Bevis departed the
2nd of May 1638, when in fact it was not yet loaded by May 12th. On May
2nd
it was given government permission to leave.
The usual assumption (see Hey's FAMILY HISTORY) is that sons stay close to
their parents' parishs after marriage. If the above William is the
individual we are looking for then he perhaps left his parish and
immediate
relatives for better pickings. The Oxfordshire Carpenters were quite
numerous and prosperous in the 1500s. Some of them attended the
university.
Some were connected to the brewer profession
profession. Anne Robbinson may of come from a brewer family. This
interpretation of 'alias' is despurted by some. Certainly Great Coxwell
was
exceedingly rural and offered few prospects to a William Carpenter
who had
various brothers. Actually the Great Coxwell Carpenter existed in
isolation
from other clusters of surnamed Carpenters in the area
In addition the William Carpenter of Wroxton was buried there in 1642. His
wife Anne in 1640.
Bruce Carpenter
