Hello to everyone out there in CARPENTER Internet Land. I could sure use
your help in finding information on my GGF prior to his marriage to Frances
E. Richardson on 18 January 1855 in Chattooga County, Georgia.? In a nut
shell I have many documents regarding his life between 1855 and his death on
14 October 1895. During this time period he lived in: Chattooga Co., GA;
Greene Co., AR (1860 Census); Walker Co., GA (1870 Census); and again in
chattooga Co., GA (1880 Census). Children were: John Jeff (b: 1857); Mary
S.E. (b: June 1864); George W. (b: 17 May 1867; Joseph C. (b: June 1873);
James Rufus (b: 12 May 1874); Noah Z. (b: 12 May 1877). John's wife Frances
died in 1887.
Census records state that John T. Carpenter was born in North Carolina, also
that his father was born also in North Carolina and his mother in
Pennsylvania. However, I don't know where in North Carolina John was born,
nor do I know his father's or mother's name or exactly there they were born.
Yes, I know this is very important information and that I will need these
pieces of information before I can hope to put all of the puzzle pieces
together. It could be that he was born a Zimmerman or was descended through
the Zimmerman line based upon the Pennsylvania connection.
Two recent possibilities being researched are: 1) J. Carpenter was reported
in the Sacramento Union on 7 September 1852 as having arrived in Placerville
between 29 August and 4 September 1852, and 2) John Carpenter from Wisconsin
was reported in the Frontier Guardian in Kanesville, Iowa as being in that
area around 1 May 1850 headed for California. Ref: Calif. Wagon Train Lists.
If anyone knows more about either of these two gentlemen, I would appreciate
hearing from you.
Two older possibilites still being research are: 1) The SS Daniel Webster
sailed from New York to San Juan de Nicaragua on 22 October 1851 wiht a John
Carpenter on board, 2) The SS North America sailed from San Juan de
Nicaragua and arrived in San Francisco on 28 November 1851 with a J. Carpent
er onboard. Information from the
www.pt5dome.com/news.html indicates that
many of the passengers appear on both passenger lists. again, if anyone
knows more about this John or J. Carpenter, I would appreciate hearing from
you.
The above areas are being researched due to not being able to find John T.
Carpenter anywhere in the Eastern portion of the U.S. during the 1850
Census.
Any information whould be helpful and deeply appreciated, wheter direct,
indirect or a recommendation on wher to look or search next.
Thanks for your help.
