I thought the same as you John, as my records of Revolutionary War Rolls shows
for the Payroll for
Capt. Thomas Emerson's company in Col Thomas Barglets Regiment in 1780 for the
defense of West Point
These men came from Southern Maine and NH.
The listing included the name of every man and his rank as well as wages, miles
traveled to Worcester (MA), miles traveled home, travel to and from West Point,
rations, and cash advanced for bread at Great Barrington (NH)
and totals.
All these numbers are given in pounds and shillings. By the magnitude of the
numbers, I doubt that any of the soldiers got this money, unless the valuation
was much different than thought compared to dollars.
Nicholas Carpenter of No. Waterborough, Maine is my ancestor on these rolls and
he was supposedly down for
679 lbs 6 shillings! I would more likely think that this is how he received his
180 acres of land in No. Waterborough after the War, as he was formerly in
Somersworth, NH. Although the county records show that he paid some money for
it as well.
If anyone is interested to see these 3 pages of rolls, I can send an image but
not allowed to attach on this list.
Send me a mail directly. The copies were made from published library books of
Revolutionary War rolls, I think, the source was Maine Historical Society in
Portland, but may have been another library in Concord NH. In any case, I am
sure this book is found in many libraries across the country.

August 1631 fined five marks for being disorderly ith drink [MBCR 1:90]. But
in other notes he is fined pounds or schillings ,
" On 3 September 1633 Robert Coles was fined L.10
for abusing himself shamefully with drink, enticing John Shotswell. his wife

incontinency, & other misdemeanor" [MBCR 1:107].
On 4 March 634/5 it was ordered that Robert Coles "shall not pay more of his
fine
of L.10, for drunkenness, &c, than hath been already levied in strong water"
[ MBCR 1:139]. All of these "
