Among my newly arrived English will is one intriguing will of a Robert
Carpenter
of Abbingdon in Berks for 1636. Robert was a father with young children at
that point
and thus the problem arose of the possibility of them never reaching
adulthood and the legal problems
of assets that presented. After the English will is an additional will of
Robert entirely in Latin
dealing with his parents and brother Thomas. Clearly it states that Robert's
parents are
a Richard and Alice and that Thomas is their son and brother of Robert. In
two of the places where these
facts are listed where it seems to say, concerning Thomas, that he is
'Angulorum alio(rem)', or something like that,
which might indicate Thomas was gone from England.
Could this have been Amesbury Thomas? There are good parish records for the
Abbingdon Carpenters
which fit a pattern.
This document will need a lot of work due to the very small script. It may
provide long sought for
clues to old problems.
