Hello,
You would think that with some good book information that one might be able to fill in the
blanks fairly easily. But not in this case.
John Zimmerman (see details below) may have been known as John, but had say Jacob as a
birth name. Or his middle name was John or similar for common use, but not otherwise. And
if he started using Carpenter, then he is lost in the mix of so many.
And I find nothing matching his wife as given in the book below.
Any of the sleuths out there see what I am missing? Or knows this family?

ZIMMERMAN, John, ex-Mayor of the city of Lancaster, was born March 22d, 1798, two miles
northwest of the city of Lancaster. When he was about eight years of age his

father moved to Columbia, and thence to Soudersburg, where he died in 1813. In 1815 the
subject of this notice came to Lancaster and entered the store of John Landis, as clerk.
In 1822 he married Anna M. Schaeffer, a sister of Judge Schaeffer, deceased.
In 1828 he was elected a member of city councils, and whilst a member moved the resolution
to in-troduce water from the Conestoga into the city of Lancaster, pumped into a reservoir
by machinery.
He was afterwards, for a time, chairman of the water committee. He attended the first
meeting held for the purpose of introducing the common school system into the schools of
Lancaster. He was a great friend of the measure.
He was for about 18 years a member of the School Board, 8 years of which he acted as
secretary.
He was city treasurer for 8 or 9 years, and in 1856 was elected Mayor of the city of
Lancaster, and reelected in 1857.
