Y-DNA markers rarely indicate health or medical issues. For example. Null

numerical zero ( 0 ) often indicates sterility. This of course is after
confirming the lab results. The Carpenter Cousins Project has had only one
(1) such result in over 400 Y-DNA tests.
I was trying to be a general as possible and likely should have used ...
could indicate sterility instead of ... often indicates sterility. I
apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
In this specific case of null values, the subject had five DYS markers
including DYS392, of which two were multiple copy markers (DYS385 and
DYS464) that had null values. He confirmed that he was sterile to me over
the phone. The doctors could never tell him why decades ago. With the Y-DNA
results, he was pleased to know a general reason for his sterility. His
case is the only one in the Carpenter Cousins Project with null values.
In his situation with DYS385, DYS392 along with DYS464 being null values
indicates sterility because of a gene issue. See:
Inadvertent diagnosis of male infertility through genealogical DNA testing

John Chandler also cites that missing or additional DYS markers does not
indicate anything per se by themselves. Group 4 for example has additional
DYS464 markers. While most members have DYS464a,b,c,d - some Group 4 members
have DYS464a,b,c,d,e,f markers.
A key word search of the word 'null' will support his statement in the
Wikipedia article on 'List of STR Markers.' See:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Y-STR_markers
I hope this clarifies my imprecise wording.

This is inaccurate. There are several markers that turn up "missing" in a
significant number of testees, and these oddities are inherited (and
therefore
NOT indications of sterility). There is only one marker whose absence has
ever been associated with sterility, and that was ONE man who lacked all
of the (normally four) copies of DYS464 and was also sterile. As it
happens,
there is a gene near DYS464, and the lack of that gene could indeed cause
sterility.
The Carpenter Cousins Project has had only one (1) such result in

That's one instance of missing DYS464. However, we don't know that the
testee in question is sterile.
