Dear Re,
Any idea of whom or where J Carpenter was born, died, et cetera?

"CARPENTER" LOCKS: In 1820 J Carpenter patented the
operating principle of
this type of lock in England, and at that time licensed other firms to
produce, what we know today as "Carpenter" locks. Our collection contains
examples made by more than 15 English firms. There is evidence that many
locks of this type were made prior to 1820, and it seems that ALL of the
English production was exported to the U. S. We have reproduced 3 sizes of
this lock operated by a bit key for years, we now offer the same lock
fitted
with a cylinder like our other X90 locks.
