Hi, I've just subscribed. I'm hoping that someone on the list can help me
verify my CARPENTER line. I've checked the "Carpenter Memorial" written by
Amos B. Carpenter. Asaph CARPENTER was born 22 Jul 1746 in Warren, Bristol,
R.I. He md. Annie_________ in possibly, Guilford, Windham, VT.. According
to Amos B., Asaph had two children, b. Hudson, NY--Abel, and "A daughter,
name not known." He doesn't give any BMD information on the son, Abel.
According to IGI, and Ancestral File, the daughter's name was Sally or Sarah
Carpenter, b. abt 1763, while her brother Abel was born abt 1771. Sally md.
Daniel HARRINGTON, sometime before 1785, in possibly Guilford, Windham, VT.
According to the Carpenter Memorial, Asaph lived in Guilford prior to moving
to NY. p. 242 states: He resided, previous to marriage in Guilford, VT
during the time of the trouble with the NY land grants. He petitioned the
governor and the council of Vermont to have the fines abated, about 1784, he
and others were fined by the court of Vermont for opposing the government of
Vermont, claiming to be under the jurisdiction of New York. In 1784 the
state's attorney was directed to suspend collection of said fine...which
accounts for the following: "A grant was given by the government of New York
to Asaph Carpenter, including Lot No. 69, of 350 acres, in 1786..." Given
his BD, a marriage at about age 20 would have had to take place in Guilford,
as would the birth of his children. It is unclear when he actually moved
into the present day Hudson area. If it wasn't until 1786, the date of the
grant, then it seems unlikely the children would have been born in Hudson,
as stated by Amos B., unless he didn't marry till he was 40 years old, in
which case Sally or Sarah, b. abt 1763 couldn't be his daughter. Asaph's
father was Benjamin Carpenter, who was:
CARPENTER, Benjamin, patriot, born in Reho-both, Massachusetts, in 1726 ;
died in Guilford, Vermont, 29 March, 1823. He was one of the founders of the
town of Guilford in 1770, and served during the revolutionary war as a field
officer. Later he was a member of the first constitutional convention of
Vermont, and also a member of the council. In 1778 he was elected lieutenant
governor of the state, and afterward became one of the council of censors.
Amos B. says that Benjamin was a Lt. Colonel in the Revolutionary war, but
an online check doesn't show a DAR lineage, which might help verify
descendancy. I would appreciate any assistance in verifying the information
given in the IGI and/or Ancestral File, and confirming the parentage of
Sally or Sarah CARPENTER. The line ascendant from William CARPENTER of
Rehoboth, the first one in America, is also different from that shown in the
Memorial. Thanks, Sandy
