John (of Walpole),
John and Elizabeth (Feake) Underhill's daughter Hannah was "borne ye 2d [not
22d] of ye 10th mo [i.e., December] 1666" (their son Nathaniel was "borne ye
22d of ye 12th mo [i.e., February] 1663") (Flushing, N.Y., Monthly Meetings
[1640-1796], 122v-123r). In the Underhill and Alsop materials I've seen, she
is said to have married, in 1685, Richard Alsop (not Thomas [see D. H.
Carpenter [1901], 67). Robert Charles Anderson (our greatest authority on
colonial New England genealogy) dates the marriage as "by 1687" but says
that, while Richard Alsop has been accepted in the secondary literature for
over a century as Hannah Underhill's husband, "primary evidence ... has not
been found " (THE GREAT MIGRATION BEGINS: IMMIGRANTS TO NEW ENGLAND
1620-1633, 3:1862, 1863). (For detailed information on Robert Feake
[Elizabeth's father], John Underhill, and their families, see ibid.,
1:656-60, 3:1859-65.) "Hannah Alsop of Newtowne Deceased [blank] of ye
[blank] mo: 1757 aged nere 91" (Flushing MM, n.p. [end of vol., upside
down]). Her gravestone says she died on 23 August 1757, in her 91st year
(Alsop burying ground, Newtown, L.I., enclosed in what is now Calvary [Roman
Catholic] Cemetery).
If your interest in Hannah Underhill, her husband, etc., stems from D. H.
Carpenter's identification (p. 67) of Thomas [SIC] and Hannah (Underhill)
Alsop as the parents of Hannah Alsop, who he says married Thomas4 Carpenter
of Rye, N.Y. (Joseph3-2, William1 of Providence), you'll need to shift the
focus of your research. Richard and Hannah (Underhill) Alsop's daughter
Hannah married, 23 May 1706, Joseph Sackett, son of Joseph and Elizabeth
(Betts) Sackett; she died in 1773 (Josephine C. Frost, UNDERHILL GENEALOGY,
Vol. 2 [1932], 65-66). Richard Alsop's will--dated at Maspeth Kills, Queens
Co., L.I., 11 Oct. 1718, proved 8 Nov. 1718--names among his legatees wife
Hannah and daughter Hannah Sackett (transcr. in Douglas Leffingwell, ALSOP
GENEALOGY [1928], 2).
A family record--transcribed by Sarah C. Field (1797-1879) on 1 Jan. 1859,
when it was in either her possession or that of her mother, Jane (Haviland)
Field (1765-1860, great-granddau. of Thomas4 Carpenter)--includes the
following information: Thomas4 Carpenter was born "8 mo. [i.e., October (not
August)], 16th day, 1687, and married 10 mo. [i.e., December (not October)],
14th day, 1708"; his wife's name is not given (Josephine C. Frost, THE
HAVILAND GENEALOGY [1914], 185-86). While my notes say that the mother of
Thomas4 Carpenter's children was named Hannah, I'm presently unable to locate
support for that statement. (Since their births don't seem to be entered in
monthly meeting records, perhaps her forename appears in one or more of
Thomas's grantor deeds). In any case, she was not Richard and Hannah
(Underhill) Alsop's daughter Hannah.
If anyone has successfully identified her, I'd be very interested in knowing
who she was.
