Carpenter, a surname of England and Ireland, from Anglo-French carpenter-carpenter: in
Ireland usually for Mac Ateer, Mac an tSaoir, Ir. saor- craftsman, free (Reaney, Cottle,
MacLysaght). Guppy found Carpenter widespread, especially in Oxfordshire and Wiltshire,
Spiegelhalter in Devon.
In Newfoundland:
Early instances: John Waldon, married at St. John's, 1758 (DPHW 26D): Nicholas, from
Cramlin (Co. Dublin), Irish convict landed at Petty Harbour or Bay Bulls, 1789 (CO
194.38); Richard, servant of Battle Harbour, 1795 (MUN Hist.); John of Bonavista, 1797
(DPHW 70); Elizabeth, of Kings Cove, 1827, of Keels, 1827 (Nfld. Archives KCRC); George,
of Catalina, 1835 (DPHW 67); George, of Little Catalina, 1842 (DPHW 67).
Modern Status: Scattered, especially at Little Catalina.
