SMALL CEMETERIES OF THE TOWN OF NORWAY Herkimer County, N.Y. The small
cemeteries below were donated by the Herkimer County Historical Society and
prepared by Town of Frankfort Editor Laura Perkins. The original readings
were done years ago by Mr. George Hildebrandt, now in his 90s and still an
active volunteer at HCHS. All spellings are as on the original lists. We'd
appreciate receiving corrections or additional family information from Town
of Norway researchers and historians to post on this page.

in the village.
Driving from Amsterdam, New York, take State Highway 67 east to Manny

the left side of the street about 1/4 mile.
We would like to thank Carl A. Kruger, caretaker of the cemetery, for
sharing the information with us. The cemetery is taken care of in a very
professional manner. It is mowed, trimmed and stones are repaired and reset.
It appears to be one of the better maintained cemeteries we have visited.
The oldest burials date back to 1808, totaling 2887 to present December 10,
2002. A complete list of military burials has been completed by Carl A.
Kruger.

The Fairfield Alumni Directory was published by The Fairfield Alumni
Association in August 1936. The alumni are from what was called at various
times, Fairfield Seminary and Fairfield Military Academy. It was a type of
secondary school, offering what today's high schools offer as well as some
more advanced courses. It was not a college. It only once achieved that
distinction, back in the medical college days. Many of the students
proceeded to colleges from Fairfield. Married names of female graduates, and
wives of male graduates, appear in parentheses following the entry. The
Alumni Association no longer exists.

MARRIAGES 1848 - 1849
These listings of vital records for the Town of Norway, 1848 - 1849, were
digitally prepared by Helen Wheatley, Norway Town Historian, from
photocopies of typescripts provided to her. The transcriptions of the
original records came from Volume 357 of the miscellaneous unpublished
records of the New York State D.A.R., available for your perusal at the main
branch of the New York City Public Library, at the State Library in Albany,
NY, and at the D.A.R. Library in Washington, D.C. We hope this list provides
clues to ancestral location and helps you better formulate questions when
visiting Mohawk Valley societies or ordering mail searches. If you recognize
anyone on this list, please drop a line to Martha so we can note it on this
page.

1810 CENSUS OF THE TOWN OF RUSSIA
HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y.
The alphabetical list of the 1810 Town of Russia census was created by
Contributing Editor Judy Dolanski from the original census, which is in
order of residence. Judy alphabetized her interpretation to make a
convenient online browsing resource. Seasoned researchers know there's a
need to be able to view records both ways, whether census records or
cemetery lists. After spotting your ancestors on this list you can view
microfilmed records of the original 1810 census at major genealogy and other
libraries, branches of the National Archives, or order from your local
Family History Center. 1810 Herkimer County is included on roll #29 of
Series M252.

Part 3
Carpenter
A family named Salisbury settled early in the eastern part of Fairfield on
the state road. I remember there were two brothers. One of them was Stephen
and the other one was a young preacher. Their parents came with them but it
was long before my recollection. I remember Stephen, who married for his
first wife a Miss Neeley, a sister of Reuben Neeley. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter
had six children, five daughters and one son, Calvin. The daughters were
Alvira, who married Malvin Chase, who bought the Calvin Salisbury farm on
Lawton street.
The second daughter, Ann, married a man named Bushnell and her sister also,
married a man by the same name and went to Pinchney, Lewis county. For his
second wife Stephen Carpenter married a Miss Harris, a sister of Andrew
Harris, who was a few years a resident of Newport. The Carpenter children
were my schoolmates for one term. The school was taught that term by Dr. J.
B. Holcomb. He was at that time a graduate from Fairfield. It was in the
year 1842-3.
Raynore
Stephen Raynore lived on Long Island. His family consisted of three sons and
two daughters. The daughters were Ruth and ___. The sons were Lewis, James
and David. James was a wholesale merchant in New York. Lewis was this
oldest. His father gave him an old fashioned hat full of silver dollars and
sent him up to Fairfield. He bought 200 acres of land; cleared a few acres
and built a log house and barn. His land was located in the eastern part of
Fairfield, on the state road. Each of the sons had fifty acres and was to
have the rest when their father saw fit to give it to them. Lewis Raynore
married for his first wife Dolly Denis__. They had nine children; four
daughters and five sons. The sons were: Harry, Stephen, John, Jerry and one
that died young. Jerry died also and Harry left and went South. Stephen
married Katy Carpenter. Polly married a Corrinne. Hannah married Eleazar
Carr. Lucy married a man named Sisson and Nancy married a man named Carver.
