The material posted yesterday concerning the identity of SARAH (MRS.
PRESERVED) ABELL confuses Abell's second wife (m. Rehoboth, 27 Dec. 1686) and the wife
of Richard Salter (said to have m. ca. 1691). The former was SARAH BOWEN, b.
Rehoboth, 7 February 1656, daughter of Richard2 and Esther (Sutton) Bowen;
the latter was SARAH BOWNE, b. Gravesend, Long Island, 27 November 1669,
daughter of John2 and Lydia (Holmes) Bowne. That the two Sarahs were one is made
highly dubious by geographical considerations and is absolutely refuted by the
fact that Sarah (Bowen) Abell died at Rehoboth, 14 May 1703, more than a decade
after Sarah Bowne is said to have married Richard Salter.
Preserved Abell, incidentally, was born almost certainly in the mid 1640s,
not "about 1668." He married his first wife, Martha Redway, in 1667; she was
born at Rehoboth in 1648.
