Just for the record, Robert your book never
confused me about Yelverton, and couldn't confuse
any objective researcher. The tentative
placement of Yelverton in your book is clearly
noted as unproved. In remarking about bringing a
higher standard for proof to Carpenter family
history research, I should have gone on to say
"on the internet." The problem is on the internet
where people state relationships as though they
are proved, when in fact they are not proved, and
others pick it up and repeat it without sourcing
their data. Your book is exceptionally well
researched and you don't draw final conclusions
without clear and documented proof. Researchers
on the internet need to follow your lead, and
clearly identify unproved placements. That's
what Laurie is doing, and I'm sure we all hope to
see more of that.

Dear List,
I am one of the people who confused everyone
about the ancestry of Yelverton
Carpenter. When I did my book, Carpenters A
Plenty, in the 1980's I
corresponded with a number of descendants of
Yelverton. All thought he was
German. His movement from NC to SC and then to
Tennessee seemed to mirror
other Carpenters I was tracing.
So I suggested that he might be related and
showed how he might be related
to the Carpenter/Zimmermans I was tracing. I
really put a "?" next to his
name and his lineage number in my book. I
never made the conclusion that he
was related to our family and that I had proven
his relationship. I printed
what I had in hopes that someone could prove or
disprove it.
I am very happy now that the DNA project has
disproven that he was a
Zimmerman. I have had great difficulty in
locating primary source
documentation of Stephen Carpenter. I found
Reuben and Fielding and
Yelverton. I have had lots of trouble locating
anything on Stephen. I
suspected after printing Carpenters A Plenty
that Stephen may have birthed a
number of these mountain NC, Tennessee, and
Kentucky Carpenters. But
without finding a will, estate papers, or
almost anything on Stephen making
the case was really hard. I also suspected,
now incorrectly, that Stephen
and his sons were somehow related to the
Mathias Zimmerman of Stokes, then
Yancey County, NC. Mathias was not a Moravian
and I still wonder if he is
related to my Zimmerman family. Maybe the DNA
project will solve that one
too.
For the record my book and my research involved
the Zimmermans who arrived
on the ship Pink Plaisance in 1732, who lived
until the 1750's in Lancaster
County, Pa, who moved in the middle 1750's to
Lincoln County, NC, and whose
descendants spread throughout NC and the west.
All the family changed their
name to Carpenter.
I am very pleased that the ancestry of
Yelverton, Fielding, Reuben, and
others is now secure. I am glad that this
information was shared on this
list.
