Iris,
Those you identify as William and Jothan Carpenter (father and son) of
Russia, Herkimer Co., N.Y., were actually Warren and Jotham, respectively.
Warren's father, JOHN CARPENTER of Swansea, Mass., married at Tiverton,
Mass. (now R.I.), 6 May 1722, SARAH HILLARD, born at Little Compton, Mass. (now
R.I.), 28 June 1692, dau. of William and Deborah (Warren) Hill(i)ard, formerly
of Hingham, Mass. (Amos B. Carpenter's volume fails to mention the
Carpenter-Hillard marriage and confuses this family with that of another John
Carpenter. For Hillard ancestry, the family of John and Sarah Carpenter, and those
of their three sons [incl. Warren], see Victor Grant Hillard Jr., "William
Hillard of Duxbury, Massachusetts," THE MAYFLOWER DESCENDANT 49[2000]:95-100,

Mistaken Identities," pub. pending [THE NEW ENGLAND HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL
REGISTER 159(January 2005)]; for parentage/ancestry of John Carpenter of
Swansea, see Zubrinsky, "Three John Carpenters." Both articles cite primary
sources.)
WARREN CARPENTER, son of John and Sarah (Hillard) Carpenter, was born at
Swansea, 26 January 1731/2, and died at Russia, Herkimer Co., N.Y., between 16
