Hello Kim,
Welcome!
You are the first person that I know of on your particular line. Going back
a generation shows a link with a 1992 pedigree from the old Carpenter
Chronicles. That referenced the data coming from Barbara Jo Foster Carpenter
of Appleton City, MO in July 1989.
Some Carpenter lines have more active descendants than others ...
Since you are new to this, please remember to work from the known to the
unknown. Document everything. Get images of documents, because you never
know when you will find an error or need it as proof later. Then back up
frequently.
Use a genealogy program. It organizes your data and allows multiple outputs
of the data. The notes allow copy and paste from email to census data and a
lot more.
There are free versions from the basic PAF to fancier versions which have
some features retarded. For the later, when you pay, you get the held back
features. These include Ancestral Quest, Roots Magic, Legacy and others.
You are on the right track for researching. Use the free programs and web
sites like
FamilySearch.org then later graduate to
Ancestry.com, Fold3 and
others. Often a County library or a local Family History Center will have a
library or institutional version to use for free. This includes colleges
and universities.
Your goal should be at least 3 proofs for each individual. Ideally you want
a documents that proves BIRTH, MARRIAGE and DEATH dates and locations. You
can add BAPTISIM or CHRISTENING, BURIAL, MARRIAGE2, DIVORCE, MILITARY,
DRAFT, OCCUPATION, EMAIL, BOOK, OBIT, CENSUS and others. Many people like to
put them in chronological order, but others place them as they find them. I
happen to like stuff in chronological order except email (toward the end)
and other critical comments (at the forefront), but that is just me. See
samples that were copied and pasted into some of my note fields below.
Remember the goal of sources & references is to allow a future version of
you or anyone else to re-create what you found for confirmation. I wished
someone had told a younger me this years ago. Maybe they did, but I sure had
to recreate a lot of material because I did not have enough details in my
barely legible hand written notes written on napkins, scrap paper and even
old photo stat paper that darkens with age!
Remember to document conflicts of information. Often down the road you may
find something that proves one or the other wrong. Later when you want a
more finished product, you can edit out emails, conflicts and such for a
more polished report.
Okay, enough for now. I am getting verbose.
I hope this helps.

Subject: [CARPENTER] Eugene CARPENTER (1850-1925)
Hello to the List,
My name is Kim Gonter and I am hoping to confirm my ancestor, Eugene
CARPENTER (31 Aug 1850 - 19 Mar 1925), as a son of John Sweeting CARPENTER
(b. 1795) and Amanda HITCHCOCK (b. 1811). I did find John and Amanda on
the Carpenter Cousins website, but saw only two children listed.
Searching
FamilySearch.org turned up several records that show my Eugene
Carpenter to be the son of John S. Carpenter and Amanda Hitchcock. If
anyone has any additional information on this relationship, I would
greatly appreciate it.
I kind of stumbled into the family tree stuff, and now I'm trying to clean
up all the information I've "inherited" from various family members.
Thanks,
Kim Gonter
For those interested here is my line:
Eugene CARPENTER and Mandana E. WOODBURY (10 Sep 1850 - 15 Jan 1933 in VT)

Nellie May (f)
Burton Eugene CARPENTER (11 Apr 1874 - 11 Jul 1944 in VT) and Josephine

William E HAYES, a grandson of Silas B WESSON/WESTON and Esther CARPENTER,
and they had a daughter, Ardelle. I believe Ralph was the only son to
have children.
