Subject: Re: [CARPENTER] Joseph and Samuel Carpenter - Zimmerman
Hi Robert,
I have read enough in the past 24 hours to realize that it only makes sense
for Joseph Carpenter to be of Swiss descent. I had already changed my tree
to drop the NY connection, and have Margaret as the mother with unknown
father.
I found Joseph's sister, and learned her husband's family is also from
Canton of Berne in Switzerland, and most of her children married Germanic
names.
One of my 1st great-grandmothers is Leno White Carpenter, as follows.
Joseph Carpenter + Susannah Eaker
Peter Carpenter + Margaret Ramsey
Joseph Carpenter + Nancy Jane Stegall
Leonidas Lafayette Carpenter + Mary Frances Warner
Leno White Carpenter
I sent my DNA kit to
ancestry.com yesterday, but I would need to be a
Carpenter to help with this, right? I know next to nothing about DNA.
My great--grandmother is the only Carpenter ancestor, who I knew. I have a
cousin, who might be aware of a Carpenter in our family and will check with
her.
Thanks so much for replying!
Ron

Dear Ron Carroll,
Many of the Zimmerman/Carpenters of the Lincoln County area of North
Carolina have had their DNA tested. They all match and they match other
Zimmermans from the village of Steffisburg in the Canton of Berne in
Switzerland. No descendant of Joseph Carpenter or his brother Samuel have
tested yet. Our DNA information is available at
familytreedna.com and we
are Family 5. I wish that we could get a member of those families to be
tested.
I wrote the book Carpenters A Plenty many years ago. It was quite a task to
get other researchers to accept that Joseph and Samuel were not New York
Carpenters. The documentation is in my book. While I still do not know
their father, their mother is documented as is a sister Salome who married
John Stucki and moved to Ohio. I have a signature of Joseph where he signed
his name in German. Samuel as you may know moved to Barren County, KY and
was quite prominent in NC and in KY.
Members of the Zimmerman family arrived in 1732 on the Pink Plaisance. They
remained in Pennsylvania until the 1750's when they migrated to North
Carolina. I traced Hans who I suspect to be the father of Christian, Jacob,
Peter, Johannes, and Ann. I feel very certain that Joseph and Samuel's
father was also a member of the 1732 ship and have a couple of possibilities
but no proof. I traced Joseph and Samuel in my book, initially believing
they were also possible sons of Hans. Proof has been offered which
indicates that is not the case.
How do you descend from Joseph? Do you know male Carpenter descendants of
Joseph who might have their DNA tested?
I look forward to hearing further from you,
Robert Carpenter

I am descended from Joseph Carpenter (1753, PA - 1839, NC) + Susannah
Eaker
(1759, PA, 1825, NC).
Until yesterday, I had thought that Joseph Carpenter descended from a
Hezekiah Carpenter, and had traced this line to NY and then England.
However, I have now read dated comments by Robert Carpenter and Lorena
Eaker, and understand that Joseph and his brother Samuel may have
descended
from Swiss Zimmerman's. These comments were from 1999-2000.
Has any of the DNA testing of the Carpenter project cleared up the lineage
of Joseph Carpenter?
Eon
