John,
Not that many years ago people thought that the two William Carpenters who came to America
in the mid 1630s were first cousins.
For the children of both William Carpenters to marry, they should have been at least
Kissing Cousins or Kissing Kin. This is a second cousin or more distant relative that can
be greeted with a kiss or considered as a possible mate. Genetic testing indicate more
than two generations separation between the founders of Groups 2 & 3.
From the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project discussion for Groups 2 &
3 ...
... [W]e can state with 95% confidence that the most recent common ancestor of
the two groups was more than 2 generations before the immigrants and less than about 20.
Therefore, the DNA testing has very nearly ruled out the often-repeated claim that the
Williams were first cousins. The most likely estimate is about 7 generations, but that is
a very rough estimate, and the 95% confidence interval is a more reasonable description of
what the DNA is telling us.

Another way of looking at the data, (still pending some changes ...) and trying to use the
historical names, is ...

of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, now part of Providence County, RI ... at:

I hope this helps.

John, thank you, I haven't paid a great deal of attention to William of Rehoboth since
my male line is from William of Providence but it's thru Joseph, who married Hannah,
daughter of Wm of Rehoboth.? I knew that William of Rehoboth owned land in RI, and
understand that it was believed to be Massachusetts colony at first.??
Love that he is buried in Rumford, which sounds like a more fitting burial place for my
Scotch Irish ancestry from Mama!
