There's a possibility of a Rehoboth (and/or a Providence) connection.
This is in the most notional terms (no notes with me today), but it
might be worth checking out.
Gene Zubrinsky documents the move of several Carpenter families from the
New England colonies to Long Island in the 1660's. There were Hempstead
and Oyster Bay (Musketa Cove) families from both Rehoboth and
Providence. The area was under colonial administration of Connecticut,
so some references to Connecticut actually refer to the English portion
of Long Island. Then when West Jersey opened to development
(unfortunately with two different grant-proprietors selling the same
land), at least one and probably more Carpenter families bought land
north of Trenton ("above the falls"), in Hopewell and surrounding in the
early 1700's. Captain John Carpenter was one of the group that bought
land from the West Jersey Society in 1708. Unfortunately, another
holder of the land grant for the same land (Daniel Coxe?) proved his
claim in court, and most West Jersey settlers had to buy their land
again, from the "new" owner. Most farmers of course couldn't afford
that, so they had to move (c. 1735).
A large contingent of evicted West Jersey farmers moved more-or-less
together to a township in northern North Carolina they originally called
the Jersey Settlement. The community that had to move may have included
some Carpenter families. Also look for the family names Titus and
Pettit. My line remained in West Jersey (still trying to find out how
they did that) until the American Revolution, so I haven't tracked the
families who had to leave. That may be your North Carolina connection
to the Lincoln County, NC Carpenters, and possibly other ancestors.
BTW, the land claims in West Jersey were not settled until the
Revolution brought a new government and re-set the land titles
(excluding the Loyalists, of course). So, the 18th Century in West
Jersey was a fascinating saga of intrigue, fraud, double-dealing, and
"very interesting" colonial governors. Somebody should write a book
about this scandal.
Side note: A son of Captain John Carpenter was known as Sheriff John
Carpenter (also had been "Captain of Troops" in Jamaica, LI, starting in
1703) moved to Hunderdon County, West Jersey, before 1725. So, is
Sheriff John the law enforcement ancestor of Sheriff Cody?? Just a
thought.
I hope that story suggests some clues. Good hunting!

evidently
not. I live twenty minutes away from Lincoln County. One of my aunts heard
the name on the news and immediately called me.
