I figure that the two Benedict Carpenters in your line, the older the grandson of Joseph
and Hannah was named for Joseph's uncle, Benedict Arnold, son of William and Christian
Peake Arnold, and once president of the Plimouth Plantations and governor of them and
Rhode Island.

Subject: [CARPENTER] CARPENTER - lurking til now
Hello Carpenter cousins,
First, a great big thank you to all the Carpenter researchers who have made my research so
much easier - and fascinating.
And clarified my confusion about whether my direct Carpenter ancestors Hannah and Joseph
came from Rhode Island or Rehoboth? Through this list, and the wonderful research posted
by Gene and John, I learned that Joseph came from Rhode Island, and Hannah from Rehoboth -
and both were Carpenters, but only VERY distant cousins!
As I am a Canadian, living just east of Vancouver, BC, Canada, almost all of my research
has been done online. I'm relatively new to genealogy, but have recently inherited a
treasure trove of family memorabilia, and now am completely hooked. I should have paid
more attention to U.S. history in my high school years (back in the mists of time), as I
now know that my American born grandfather, Edward Jay Lowe, had very deep family roots in
colonial New England and Dutch New York/New Jersey.
But today's message from Kenneth G Carpenter has inspired me to introduce myself to
the whole group. My Carpenter line is as follows:
Me: Elizabeth Gail McArthur, nee Stringer, born 1950 Vancouver, BC, Canada
Marian Edith Wales Lowe
b. Dec. 1924, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
m. Dec 1947, Gordon Stringer (UK ancestors only)
` d. May 2012, White Rock, BC, Canada
Edward Jay Lowe
b. 1883 Ypsilanti, Michigan
m. 1924, Edith Charlotte Wales, (UK and Canadian brick walls)
d. 1973, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Mary Angeline Davis
b. 1856, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
m. 1879 Austin Childs Lowe
d. 1948 Lansing, Michigan
Phebe Titus Dean (Society of Friends
b.May 1812, Cornwall, Orange, New York
m. 1843, Jehiel Davis
d. 1872, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
Abigail Carpenter (S. of F.)
b. 1776 Jamaica, Queens, New York
m. 1804 Daniel Dean (source Rochester Monthly Meeting records found online)
d. 1865, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
Benedict Carpenter (SoF)
b. Scarsdale, Westchester, NY
m. 1761 Hannah Powell,
d. 1790 Dutchess Co, NY
Benedict Carpenter (SoF)
b.1717 Musketa Cove (Oyster Bay) NY
m. 1737 Hannah Haviland
d. unknown (
ancestry.com trees say 1791 Litchfield, CT??) Need help here....
William Carpenter
b. 1666 Pawtucket, Providence RI
m. 1717, Elizabeth unknown (need help here, too!)
d. 1749
Joseph Arnold Carpenter
b.1635 Providence Plantation, RI
m. 1659 Hannah Carpenter of Rehoboth, MA
d. 1670 Oyster Bay, NY
As I can only confirm this line with primary sources (bmd documents + family letters) up
to Hannah Carpenter Dean, I welcome all corrections and suggestions. I'm stuck at
Daniel Dean, husband of Hannah Carpenter. I believe his father was also a Daniel Dean,
son of Jedediah Dean and Ariontyea Van Winkle. But I have only a first name for Daniel
Sr's wife: Sarah. I suspect she belonged to the Society of Friends,; Jedediah left
his son Daniel only a pittance, whereas the other sons, who didn't join the Friends,
were left substantial legacies.
Again, my thanks to all my Carpenter cousins who have done such wonderful research and
made it available to us all. I'd love to hear from any cousins who share any part of
my line, or have any suggestions for me, or would like to know about my corner of our
continent!
Gail
