Gene, thank you so much for replying to my "introduction", and for your
wonderfully helpful "comments"!
Yes, I meant Abigail Carpenter in that paragraph. I think at least half of my female
ancestors are named Abigail or Hannah! I have a granddaughter named Hannah - when
she's old enough I'll show her the many family Hannahs who preceded her!
I've wondered about the Scarsdale as well, and clearly need to do more research on the
younger Benedict - thanks for pointing this out. Living on the west coast of Canada, my
knowledge of the geography of the areas in which my early ancestors lived is sadly
lacking...but I'm a willing student, and happy to have my cousins help me up my
learning curve. Now when I read about Pawtuxet and/or Pawtucket I'll have a much
better understanding - again, my thanks.
And finally, I've now read The Carpenter Sketches and thanks to you will make the
necessary changes to my tree and family files.
Gratefully,
Gail McArthur

Gail,
Did you mean Abigail (rather than Hannah) Carpenter in the paragraph following your
lineage outline?
I can't help with the information you seek, but I can make a few remarks that I hope
you'll find useful.
That you have Long Island birthplaces for both the father and son of the younger Benedict
Carpenter makes me wonder if the Scarsdale birthplace you have for him is correct.
William3 Carpenter was born (by 3 Sept. 1666) not at Pawtucket but Pawtuxet. These are
two (actually three) different places: the former is northeast of Providence; the latter
is south of Providence and straddles the mouth of the river of the same name, in the
southeastern corner of present-day Cranston and the northeastern corner of Warwick.
Sometime between 1638 and 1642, the Carpenters and Arnolds moved from the original
Providence settlement to what was then the Pawtuxet section of Providence; it remained
part of Providence Township until the creation of Cranston, in 1754.
There is no known record providing, directly or indirectly, the surname of Joseph2's
wife, Elizabeth, and no basis for dating their marriage in 1717, which was the year their
youngest child, Benedict, was born. Nor am I aware of any evidence that Joseph2 died in
1749; the last known record of him was at Oyster Bay in 1734.
It is misleading to refer to Joseph2 Carpenter as Joseph Arnold Carpenter. Middle names
were virtually nonexistent during this period, and it is inappropriate to assign a
mother's maiden name to her son as a middle name unless it is found as such in one or
more records of the time.
Joseph2 was born not in 1635 (until a few years ago, it had been thought that he had been
born in England) but about 1638 (he was aged 26 in a 1664 deposition). He married Hannah2
Carpenter of Rehoboth about 1658 (not the oft-repeated 21 April 1659, which was the day on
which her father's will was proved).
For the most current and reliable data on the early generations of Rehoboth and
Providence Carpenters and their respective origins in England, see Carpenter Sketches.
Concerning the message of John Carpenter <texjonmac(a)yahoo.com> referring to
Joseph2's uncle Benedict Arnold, he was president and then governor of the Colony of
Rhode Island and _Providence_ Plantations.

Joseph came from Rhode Island or Rehoboth? Through this list, and the wonderful research
posted by Gene and John, I learned that Joseph came from Rhode Island, and Hannah from
Rehoboth - and both were Carpenters, but only VERY distant cousins!

research has been done online. I'm relatively new to genealogy, but have recently
inherited a treasure trove of family memorabilia, and now am completely hooked. I should
have paid more attention to U.S. history in my high school years (back in the mists of
time), as I now know that my American born grandfather, Edward Jay Lowe, had very deep
family roots in colonial New England and Dutch New York/New Jersey.

up to Hannah Carpenter Dean, I welcome all corrections and suggestions. I'm stuck at
Daniel Dean, husband of Hannah Carpenter. I believe his father was also a Daniel Dean,
son of Jedediah Dean and Ariontyea Van Winkle. But I have only a first name for Daniel
Sr's wife: Sarah. I suspect she belonged to the Society of Friends,; Jedediah left
his son Daniel only a pittance, whereas the other sons, who didn't join the Friends,
were left substantial legacies.
