John. . .
Your mail got lost in a computer shuffle. But today it was found. (nothing
is ever really, totally gone).
I (we) have a new website
www.carpentier-carpenter.org
It is created with the hope that someone who knows something we wish to
know for the current book research might stumble in and leave a note.
Note the art work. click on the little picture to see it in its entirety.
look in the lower right corner. there, highlighted, is a singular man. i
believe, and others who have some interest in the subject, agree, that
that is likely Horace Carpentier. It would seem that he "homesteaded" in
what was then a rather uncivilized oakland, across the bay, because of
the oaks; this was the encinal. HWC was, all his life, a conservationist,
a lover of animals and trees. He often sold land, and stipulated in the
sales agreement that the trees on the property would not be destroyed. I
rather think that he had himself put into this picture, "The Oaks of
Oakland" without any reference to his identity. I have the original which
was published as a book plate on a survey of the state in the mid 1870s.
Oakland, unfortunately, lost all of that beauty.
Progress is not always our most important product.
Thanks for the good words. We are finding stuff, but most are needles in
the haystack. While Horace may have been a man of fine sensibilities, he
was also a very private person who covered his tracks well. That picture
on the first page is the only photograph i have so far seen. He did not
wish to be photographed.
My partner in this venture is a man who grew up and lives in Galway, N.Y.,
the home town of HWC. During his growing up he heard much about the man,
all of it quite positive.
On the east coast he was known and a philanthropist, and a good man.
On the west coast he was known as a scoundrel and an enemy of progress and
of what is good.
Ralph was surprised to learn of this disparity, found my book, wrote for
more
information, and through our correspondence we united to write an honest
biography.
