CARPENTER, ZACHARIAH, was from Rhode Island, and was born in 1766. He m.
Lydia,
daughter of Samuel and Amy Wightman, and settled in this town early in the
present century. He was
for many years a tavern-keeper near the railroad station at the mouth of
Cold river. He had a family of
eight children, as follow:
I. Albert, b. June 10, 1814; d. Oct., 1879; m. first, Mary Wilder of Keene,
N.H., and had seven
children, four of whom are living; viz., 1st, Edward, lives in South
Royalston, Mass. 2d, Emily,
lives in Rutland, Vt. 3d, Henry, lives in Rutland, Vt. 4th, Thomas, lives
in the city of New York,
m. second, a widow Gage of Westminster, Vt.
II. Amanda, m. Capt. Elijah Holbrook, of Surry, N.H.
III. Caroline, m. Warren Daniels of Keene, and lived for a while in this
town; but subsequently
removed to Rutland, Vt.
IV. Amy, m. a Gaskell of Clarendon, Vt.
V. Frances, m. a Pettis, and settled at Bellows Falls, Vt.
VI. Elmira, m. Thomas Heaton of Drewsville, Oct. 30,1821, and d. June 6,
1823, aged 24.
VII. Thomas K., d. young.
VIII. Samuel, of whom nothing is known.
Zachariah Carpenter died Feb. 22, 1837; his wife died July 28, 1847, aged
73.
CARPENTER, DAVIS. There were two families by the name of Carpenter living
in town about the
year 1800. The one of which the following account is given lived on the
elevation of land in the southeast
part of the town known as "Carpenter’s hill." He purchased the place once
owned by Josiah Goldsmith.
The mainly traveled road through Walpole to Boston passed by his door. He
kept a public house there
for a score or more of years, and brought up a numerous family, many of
whom were persons of
respectability. The date of birth of three of his children is not known,
two of whom are supposed to be
the oldest members of the family. Abigail, his mother, died in town, Nov.
30, 1816, aged 94. Ch.
I. Amasa, d. March13, 1838; m. Rebecca Mason, March 21,1798. Ch. 1st,
Calvin, b. May 14,
1798; m. Laura, dau. of Levi Fay. 2d, Sally, b. June 10,1800; m Joseph L.
Fay. 3d, Althea, b.
April 7,1802; never married. 4th, Elsie, m. W. H. Scovil.
II. Sylvester, m. Lydia Bowker, second wife, Aug. 23, 1826. Ch. 1st;
Walter, b. June 12, 1808;
studied medicine and went west.
III. Walter, m. Abigail Bowker, Oct. 18, 1812.
IV. Ruth, m. William Kingsbury March 3, 1820.
V. Sally, b. June 26, 1796, and d. the next year.
VI. Lucy, b. Oct. 1, 1797; m. Charles Bugbee, in 1822.
VII. Davis jr., b. Dec. 25, 1799; became a physician and went north.
VIII. Cyril, b. Oct. 29, 1801; went north.
Miriam, Davis Carpenter’s wife, died June 11,1803, aged 43. He m., the same
year, the widow
Lucy Bowker of Westmoreland, who had the following children: Cushing, Lucy,
Sally, and, it is
said, two others.
IX. Miriam, b. Oct. 8, 1804; m. Charles E. Chase of this town, Nov. 17,
1825.
X. Nancy Cushing, b. Sept. 6, 1806; m. Dr. Foster Hooper of Fall River,
Mass.; d. July 29, 1834.
XI. Sophia, b. Dec. 16, 1808; m. Luther Proctor; d. Oct. 12, 1836.
XII. Louisa, b. Aug. 10, 1810; had bad luck in her marital relations. She
went north among
her friends.
XIII. Eliza, b. Dec. 29, 1812; m. William Barron, and lives at Bellows
Falls.
