It's evident that some listers just don't get it. The issue of inappropriate
postings has nothing to do with a specific point of view but with any content that is off
topic. Are those who readily approve of messages with a right-wing bias as willing to
accept postings with a left-wing slant? How about messages that assume a majority-Jewish,
-Muslim, or -atheist readership? Sports- or mathematics-related postings? If any one of
the above is appropriate, then all are appropriate; if any one is inappropriate, then all
are.
Failure to observe the mailing-list protocol that messages adhere to the topic for which
the list was created opens the door to a level of contamination that no one would welcome.
The facile advice simply to delete objectionable messages--or, more to the point,
irrelevant ones--would doubtless not satisfy those giving it if they were subjected to a
steady diet of them.
From time to time, it seems necessary to remind ourselves that this is
a GENEALOGY mailing list--period.
