MargM,
Darwin Erascles Carpenter-93234 once believed to be the son of Darwin
Carpenter-28384 (b. 5 Sep 1823 VT), brother to your Edwin Reuben
Carpenter-28349, has been disproven.
Darwin Erascles Carpenter-93234 now has the confirmed father of Roswell
Carpenter-198792 (b. abt 1802/1810 VT - d. 1 Jan 1879 VT) and grandson of
Roswell Carpenter-42275 (b. abt 1768/1772 VT - d. 1 Jul 1852 VT).

The difference is that the two lines cited above come from different sons of
William Carpenter-584 who immigrated to America in 1638 and who settled in
Rehoboth, MA.
Darwin Carpenter-28384 is now more of a mystery because he too seems to
disappear during or after the American Civil War. It is now assumed that he
died about that time period.
This means that the brother cited in the letter was more likely a
half-brother or an adopted brother. Likely William Henry Carpenter-32674 (b.
Aug 1844 NY - d. abt 1875/1880 ?) who was clearly alive in 1870 living next
door to Cyrus Carpenter-6758 (b. 29 Dec 1794 VT - d. 5 Jan 1871 NY) and his
mother Jane E.
WHC-32674 had two male children who have not been traced forward in time.
They being Charles W. Carpenter-140374 and Cyrus W. Carpenter-140375 and
being born respectively about 1867 and 1869. Both being cited in Sweden,
Monroe, New York, USA in the 1870 US Census.
I too hope that one day a researcher will find what happened to your
Carpenter ancestor. Of the many possible scenarios that could have happened
is that he was shanghaied or waylaid during his path homeward.
Best wishes!

Subject: [CARPENTER] Re: Australian CARPENTERs
Hi John,
Been quite cool on this side of the World . Am still hoping one day to
discover what ever happened to husbands gt gt gfather Edwin Reuben CARPENTER
b c 1827 Essex Co NY. He arrived in Australia in 1852 . Married 1853 and had
8 children. Left his family here 1869 and returned to America . He was in
Brockport , Monroe Co NY early January 1871 when his father, Cyrus died
( 5 Jan 1871). Soon after he must have just wondered off into the sunset .
According the Carpenter Memorial book Cyrus & Hannah had another son,
called Darwin b1823, and a daughter named Sally Mellisa. Found the Sally
Mellisa ref was a typo ages ago and should have been Mary Jane. But Darwin
remains a mystery. I have copy of a letter Edwin wrote to his wife from
Brockport , where he says his sisters and brother ( who is unnamed ) send
their love and that he had twice send her some money. Often wondered just
how that was done back in 1871 ?????
His wife took ill and died here in 1877. Probate info records her as wife
of Edwin R CARPENTER of parts beyond the seas.
Have known of the outline of this story since 1990 and found out a great
deal of info except what ever happened to E Reuben and just what was his
brother, Darwins correct name ??? So its still a challenge ………..
Bye
