Hello Cousins,
I want to thank Curtis for those on and off list notes of appreciation.
For Carpenter/Zimmerman and related surname research, it is good to review the basics,
places and such. And one such question did come up off list. But it was a good question.
One of the questions off list was if there was any specific web site where one could get
some basic information of how to do genealogical research.
The answer is that there are many such web sites out there. Each have their own fortes
and foibles.
And I am going to advise of one website in particular. It is not the best, nor the worse,
but it will be helpful to many.
I volunteer at the local FamilySearch Library aka The San Diego Family History Center
(FHC). There I encourage new staff and beginners to check out our web page. See:

Yes, it is a bit LDS centric, but it is excellent for beginners and intermediate
genealogical researchers. You can learn how to get started, how to research, learn about
free on line courses and short training videos and more links to helpful genealogical web
pages.
Yes, go to that last one and there is a link at the bottom that will link you to 88 very
helpful web pages.
There is more ...
Under 3.2 Oral History Studio - it contains a handout on oral history and two links
regarding interview questions that can be asked.
Under 4. Patron Software Resources - you can learn about the free genealogy programs that
link with
FamilySearch.org and other search sites.
Under 5. Family Activities – There are links that are helpful in creating oral histories,
family reunions and how to get youth involved in family history activities.
Under 7. Class Schedules - are class lists including some that have hand outs.
For example KISS Genealogy has a pdf handout that is an Introduction, setup with quick,
effective documentation for research material. KISS techniques once learned makes you a
more efficient genealogical researcher.
Another example is DNA Testing – It has two handouts. One is the pros and cons and the
other has what your need to know about DNA tests.
Under 10. Other Links – is a link to what to do with your genealogy and family history. By
reviewing this article now, you may restructure your research efforts toward your end
goal.
Another link will tell you’re the Best Genealogical Search sites of 2018. At least told by
Ryan Brown.
Yet another link will give you five reasons to digitize your family photos.
Finally are the very end of that section is The Family History Guide – a link to online
basic, intermediate and advanced training in genealogy and family history.
I happen to really like the format of The Family History Guide. Yes, it is a little heavy
on
FamilySearch.org and
Ancestry.com stuff. But that is not surprising since those two
are the top genealogical providers around.
I hope that this message and what it contains is helpful to your Carpenter/Zimmerman
Cousin research!
