Subject: Sussex Carpenters
The subject of surname Carpenter in Sussex was brought up. The owner
of
the the site in questioned has been unduly intimidated by the frequent use
of "Carpenter" in the "1327 Sussex Lay Subsidy Roll." The roll is
well
worth looking at, however, the occupational carpenters listed there were
probably forest workers and did not maintain their profession as a surname
designation. To suggest that the Horsham Carpenters were their descendants
is somewhat ridiculous. The reader is advised to read the article at
www.bahs.org.uk/17n2a2.pdf
