Subject: Jedediah Carpenter 1776-1860
Hello
I am a descendant of Jedediah Carpenter, b 8 Apr 1776 -- d 9 Apr 1860 in
Middlebury, Tioga Pa. and married to Sarah Stratten. They had a son also named
Jedediah 1802 -- 1856 and married to Sarah Burley.
I am looking for anything to strengthen the connection of their relationship
such as a will, probate file or any other legal paper mentioning then as
father and son. The only item that I have that connects them is from the
Carpenter Memorial.

Hello Cousin Scott - I am also a descendant of Jedediah Carpenter. My great
grandfather, Silas Howard married Rebecca/Betsy/Becky/Ann/Anna Carpenter,
daughter of Jedediah Carpenter, Jr. They appear on page 797 in A Genealogical
History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America. And as we
know they did not go to Illinois and die!! [My grandparents were Martha
Cleo Floyd and Charles V. Howard. Silas, Martha Cleo and Charles all died in
Royal, Antelope County, Nebraska and are buried in the Royal Cemetery. Rebecca
died in Spokane, Washington 29 Apr 1911 and is buried in Spokane,
Washington.]
I can't provide the information you request, e.g. a probate or legal
document but I hope someone will be able to provide the material and perhaps you
will share with me.
Maybe some of my notes would be of assistance:
Jedediah Carpenter, born 18 April 1776, Rehoboth, Bristol, MA; died 19 April
1860, Middlebury, Tioga, PA. He married Elizabeth or Sarah. Sources: 1. A

Family moved from Richmond, NH shortly before Jedediah's birth. Jedediah
and his brother, Samuel Carpenter, bought into a company jointly in 1808 in
Osceloa, Tioga, PA. After their mother died March 16, 1811, they sold out in
June; the signatures were, "Samuel and wife Sally" and Jedediah and wife Sarah.
Source 2 lists a Jedediah Carpenter who died in Middlebury on the 9th
inst., 19 Apr 1860 at the age of 84 years and one day. Source #3: US Census, 1820

were from Delaware, Maryland, Philadelphia and Virginia. This was in the
years 1801 and 1802. In christening the township, out of compliment to the
states from which they had emigrated they called it Virdelmar, the abbreviations
of Virginia, Delaware and Maryland. When it was incorporated as a township
it went on record as Delmar omitting Vir. In the assessment in the year
1815, which embraced the township of Delmar, covering the territory now composed
of Delmar, Charleston, Middlebury, Shippen, Clymer, Gaines, Elk, Morris,
Duncan, a portion of Liberty with the borough of Wellsboro, the following names
appear (among other names): Rosel Bailey, Alpheus Cheeney, Jediah Carpenter,
William Hill, Many Jackson's, Orange Hotchkiss, etc. 1850 Middlebury Twp.,
Tioga Co., PA Family#125 lists Jedidiah Carpenter, age 74, born NH;
SarahCarpenter, age 72, born MA and Samuel Carpenter, age 26, born PA. The 1815
assessment of Tioga County, PA includes Rosel Bailey, Alpheus Cheeney, Jediah
Carpenter and William Hill.
Regarding Jedediah Carpenter, born about 1801, Osceola, Tioga, PA. Death
about 1860, probably Middlebury, Tioga, PA. Sources: 1. A Genealogical
History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America. 2. US Federal
Census, 1850.
Jedediah resided in Middlebury, PA in 1850. 1850 Census lists Jedidiah
Carpenter, age 48, born NH, James Carpenter, age 21, born PA and Rhoda Carpenter,
age 14, residing in the Mariah s. (Carpenter) and Alonzo Locey Family
residence. Jedediah was in Osceola, PA by 1807. Son James Carpenter lists both of
his parents were born in PA. Deeds and Mortgages, Middlebury PA: 187-
Mott, Henry of Delmar Twp., 1809. Deed to John Parker of Delmar Twp. adj. to
lands of James Whitney. Lands conveyed from Geo. Strawbridge to Samuel and
Jedediah Carpenter, former lands of Charles Carpenter to James Whitney. Wit -
Jedediah Carpenter, Sarah Carpenter, Samuel Carpenter, Sally Carpenter, Eddy
Howland, Israel Bulkley, Philender Thomas. Harris Hotchkiss of Delmar
Township, PA is also listed in Deeds and Mortgages.
The above notes may, or may not, be of interest to you. Would enjoy hearing
from you or any other descendants of Jedediah, etc. My cousins in Nebraska
are in the process of writing a booklet regarding the descendants of Silas
Howard and they are planning a "Descendants of Silas Howard Reunion" in May.
Several of us are all still trying to find the names of the parents of Silas
Howard.
