Those of you on this list who are researching your Jewish ancestry
will be
able to benefit that research immensely by attending the International
Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies' 26th Annual Conference on Jewish
Genealogy.
This year's conference will be held in New York City. The dates of the
conference are Sunday, August 13th through Friday, August 18th. The conference
headquarters is the Marriott Marquis Hotel on Broadway at 45th Street, near
many buses and subways.
The conference's home page is at
http://www.jgsny2006.org. From there,
click
on the links on the menu - and click on every link so you don't miss
anything!
Take a look at the list of topics and the speakers who are coming to New
York
from around the world to share their knowledge with you (that page is
being added to regularly) and the meetings of Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
and Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF).
The "Research in New York" page supplies names, addresses, phone numbers,
and a brief description of the holdings of almost one hundred public,
private, and government libraries, archives, and agencies in the five boroughs.
Click on the names of the repositories to visit their websites.
"Jewish Cemeteries in the New York Metropolitan Area" provides names,
addresses, and phone numbers and pertinent information about each cemetery.
Travel directions via public transportation are also given.
The FAQs answer - obviously! - the most frequently asked questions by
those
thinking of or planning to attend the conference.
For the first time at an IAJGS conference, there will be a unique
opportunity
for you to speak directly to representatives of many public and private
repositories and get insight into their collections, their policies, and
their procedures. A Repository Fair has been designed to provide you with the
information you will need for making effective and efficient use of the
facilities both in person and once you return home. An interesting mix of
repositories has already committed to participating in this Sunday event. To see a list
of their names, scroll down to the bottom of the conference home page and
click on the word "here."
You are invited to sign up for the conference mailing list.
And you are especially invited to register for the conference online. I
hope to
see you there!
