I have William Shook CARPENTER b.Aug 11 1805 to Benjamin CARPENTER and Melea
SHOOK CARPENTER. Benjamin b.1785 in VA, d. 1820 in a boating accident on the
Mississippi River, was brother to my 3ggf Abner CARPENTER. But I don't have
your James in my database, so I don't know how he fits in. Abner and Benjamin
were Amherst Co VA CARPENTERS. Abner ended up passing away in Mason Co. IL in
1853; William S. CARPENTER d. 1875 in Caldwell Co. TX.
Nice to see something on the list about this line--I guess we're a pretty
small part of the CARPENTER pie--

I believe I finally have found a connection to my ggg grandfather's family.
Doctor JAMES J CARPENTER b. 1807 TN.
The above tax list contains all 4 surnames connecting my families.
James J. married Mildred SEAY. Her parents were Rosa B. LOVING & Abraham
SEAY. Mildred's daughter Rosa married James T. CREWS (Cruise).
Doctor James J. Carpenter is listed in 1840 & 1850 Talladega/Benton AL
census being born in TENN. Close by is WILLIAM SHOOK CARPENTER born abt
1805 also
in TENN. William S. Carpenter lived next to SEAYS. I believe Wm S and
James J were brothers.
According to the 1840 census, Dr. James J. Carpenter had a son born between
1831 and 1835. That son is not in household of 1850 so he either died or
married. James J did have another son named JOHN N. CARPENTER who was
living in
Talladega area of ALA late 1800s.
I would appreciate it if you could email this to any of the Amherst
researchers.
Thanks for your help,
