Good job - but what are you doing in Philly?

Subject: [CARPENTER] Carpenter Sisters of Leydon
I was quite surprised that you would recommend something so fraught with
errors. The material pertaining to Richard Carpenter (of Amesbury,
father of
William1 of Providence), William1 Carpenter (father of William2 of
Rehoboth),
and their ancestry, spouses, and children can be discarded almost in its
entirety. The relationship attributed to these two families, moreover,
has not
been proved, and that between them, on the one hand, and the Alexander
Carpenter family, on the other, lacks any evidence whatsoever; it is
highly unlikely
on geographical grounds alone. The author's main sources are the
respective
volumes of Amos B. Carpenter and Daniel H. Carpenter, both of which
(especially the former) contain serious mistakes. And Heinsohn has
compounded them
with errors of his own.
The only part of the piece that _might_ be worth reading is that
pertaining
to Alexander Carpenter's daughters. I'm not sufficiently well versed on
them
to say, off the top of my head, one way or the other, and I don't have
any
resource materials here in Philly that I can check. But in any case, I'd
say
that the most up-to-date and reliable information about them is to be
found
in Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins, 3 vols. (Boston,
1995).
If you want to post this message or any part of it on the Carpenter
mailing
list, please do. It's sketches such as Heinsohn's that keep alive many of
the misconceptions I've worked so hard to dispel.
Best wishes,
Gene
