re: Isabella Carpenter
In 1998 I corresponded with Jan (the one looking for Isabella Carpenter
line). I think I can give you a little more info. Back then Jan said she
thought Isabella was married to Thomas Morgan Carpenter and they lived in
GA. Isabella then appeared as widow in ALA and then moved to Santa Rosa Co.
FL. The 1850 Santa Rosa census puts her birth about 1790. She lived next
to Morgan E. Carpenter and in her household had a Mary Carpenter age 27 and
a William Carpenter age 5. I presumed that Isabella did not birth a son at
the age of 55 and that this William was probable son of the Mary in her
household, who may have been the wife of Isabella's son William Henry
Carpenter.
I have long tried to connect Thomas & Isabella Carpenter to my line but
could not. However, they would fit so nicely if proven. Here are things
that made me believe a connection to my line:
1. Thomas Morgan Carpenter was purported to be in GA and born 1790 or
before. Thomas Carpenter of Henry Co. GA was born about 1780.
2. Thomas of Henry Co. had a son named Thomas M. Carpenter born 1810.
3. Isabella was in Alabama 1840 as widow.
Some of my Thomas's sons of Henry Co. went to Alabama about 1838 and
Thomas disappears.
4. Isabella had a son William Henry Carpenter b. circa 1820
Thomas of Henry Co had a son William Henry Carpenter b. circa 1825
w/wife MARY.
5. The name MORGAN.
Thomas of Henry Co. placed bond for the HARLAN orphans. Their widowed
mother then married Elias MORGAN who also died circa 1830. The widow went
to Alabama.
Anyway, there are a lot of coincidences that make me wonder if Isabella was
a second wife of Thomas Carpenter of Henry Co. GA.
On the other hand, in Tennessee there were two marriages of an Isabella to a
CARPENTER. One was after Isabella's children were born but the other is a
good match for time:
William Carpenter m. Isabella Mc CLINE Feb 18 1822 Knox Co. TN.
That not only matches for time period, but her son's name William as well.
I don't know if there is anyone out there with knowledge of the Tennesee
Isabella line? I did not note how Jan got the info that Isabella's
husband's name was Thomas Morgan Carpenter. I am sure you know that Santa
Rosa County was once part of Alabama. Here is the 1850 census:
NEIGHBORS: Bowers, Landon, Long, Hosman, Hays (in Hays home is 19 yr old
J.Wells McLean of TN), Hemphill, Spence,Wells, Peal, Trammel, Shorter,
Fleming, Watson, Walker, Dixon, Whitmire, Taylor, Clark, Barbun

I hope this helps a little and I do hope someone finally links Jan's
Isabella Carpenter.
