Dennis,
The 1860 US census was taken as of 1 June 1860. Call ups for volunteer
Union troops did not start until 1861. Drafts did not start until 1864.
The War Between the States began with the firing on Fort Sumpter by the
Confederates on 12 April 1861 (accepted date) and ended with General Robert
E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 April 1865 (accepted date).
However, slavery fueling the states' rights issue along with the loss of
Congress and Northern opposition to the new Fugitive Slave Law made the
election of 1860 the straw that broke up the Union. By March 1861, Lincoln's
innauguration, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia,
Louisiana, and Texas had seceded.
The Civil War was a young man's war.
A study of a million Federal enlistments turned up only 16,000 as old as
forty-four, and only 46,000 of twenty-five or more.
Yet by other authorities, the Union armies were made up like this: 30
per cent of men under twenty-one; 30 per cent from twenty-one to
twenty-four; 30 per cent from twenty-five to thirty; 10 per cent over
thirty.
For a detailed break down on Union and Confederate ages, see:

So, did your GGGrandfather fudge about his age to get out of the Civil War.
No. Even if he did get "drafted" he could have bought a "replacement"
to
serve for him.

Subject: [CARPENTER] Civil War Info
Okay all you Civil War buffs, or as it is referred to here in the
south
"the
recent unpleasantness". Does anyone know if there was any age restriction
for being called up to serve in the units from Ohio.
In the 1860 Census I find my GGGrandfather, his brother, and half brother
all listed in successive homes/farms on the census page but my
GGGrandfather's age is 30 and his birth year is 1830 instead of 26 and
1834
as all the other censuses would have calculated his age and birth year to
be. I was wondering if he may have fudged a little to stay at home?
