Obituary
(Clyde) Dean Carpenter (93) passed away November 26, at Crest View
Care Center in Chadron, Nebraska. He was the widower of Zolita (Morris)
Carpenter, they shared 65 years together.
He was born to Ralph J. and Florence (Reno) Carpenter March 6, 1926 in
Beaver Valley, NE.
He attended rural school in Beaver Valley until the Family moved to
Chadron where he continued his education receiving his diploma from Chadron
High School in 1944.
He joined the Merchant Marines when he turned 18 and served in the
South Pacific during World War II. On his first leave he returned to Chadron
and married his high school sweetheart, Zolita Morris.
After the war her returned to Chadron moving to Cheyenne, Wyoming in
1948. While in Cheyenne he drove city bus and began his retail career,
moving to Casper in 1962. He moved to Midvale, Utah in 1973 where he and
Zolita opened their first shoe store. They went on to own eight stores at one
time in the Salt Lake/Orem Valley.
Upon retirement in 1993 he moved back to Chadron and became active in
the community. He was a member of Dawes County Museum Board, a
member of; The Dawes/Sioux County Historical Society, Charon area Boy
Scouts and the LDS Church.
Dean is survived by: daughter Zoe Deana Robinson of Douglas, WY; son
Barry Carpenter of Sioux Falls, SD; 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2
step-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, a daughter, a granddaughter: his
parents, brother and sister.
Services will be held Friday December 6 (2:00 pm) at the LDS church
followed by interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Dawes County
Museum. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970;
Chadron, NE 69337.

Funeral Services for Zolita E. Carpenter, age 83, of Chadron will be Tuesday,
June 16, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Church of Latter Day Saints in Chadron with
President Joel Hyer officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron.
A memorial has been established for the Chadron Hospice. Donations may be
sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970 Chadron, NE 69337.
Zolita E. Carpenter died June 11 at her home in Chadron. She was 83.
Zolita Esther Carpenter was born to Charley B. and Esther Morris Nov. 30
1925 in Edgemont, S.D.
She attended school at 4 corners, a small consolidated school near Spencer,
Wyo. her father was the school bus driver.
The family moved to Chadron in 1934. Her father drove tanker truck for the
refinery and after let the children ride with him to Lance Creek, Wyo. and back.
Zolita attended West Ward School through grade 6 then went to East Ward
School in Grade 7; and High school grades 9-12.
She was very active in school. She played saxophone in the school band and
traded her saxophone for a baton, much to her mother’s displeasure, because
the Pep Club twirling uniforms were cuter. She participated in school plays and
carnivals.
Her mother started a beauty salon in June 1940 and her father died suddenly
of a heart attach in July.
Zolita was at once the older sister of three fatherless children and a mother
with a business burden, so she really became a surrogate mother to brother
these years younger and a 9 year old sister. The created a very strong family
bond that exists yet today.
Zolita graduated in May 1943 and received her cosmetology license in June
1943, the youngest licensed operator in Nebraska at the time.
She married Dean Carpenter Sept. 14, 1944.
Immediate Survivors:
Husband- Dean Carpenter of Chadron, NE.
Son- Barry Craig Carpenter of Ponder, TX.
Daughter- ZoeDeana Robinson of Douglas, WY.
Brother- Charley L. Morris of Salisa, OK.
Sister- Alice Mae Hotchkiss of San Antonio, TX.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
