Moses Pierce, Westchester's Friend of Freedom by Dorothee von Huene Greenberg - 13
pages.
Westchester Historian, vol. 88, no. 1, published in 2012. Produced by the Westchester
County Historical Society.
Includes a picture of Moses Pierce, his wife Esther Carpenter Pierce and her father Joseph
Carpenter. Other pictures include those related to the underground railroad and
Abolitionists. Article also includes pictures of their house and area. Good selection of
end notes.
The opening lines of the article are:
"A little known hero of Pleasantville, New York, Moses Pierce (1816-1886), left no
papers or letters that would document his courage in fighting slavery. Instead he lived
his life quietly, acting with conviction and inspiring members of his family and community
with his strongly-held abolitionist beliefs. This article is an attempt to bring
Moses' story into the light, to reveal the peaceful Quaker farmer who served a vital
role in Westchester's Underground railroad ..." See the complete article at:

Hello Cousins,
Recently, I had a query about Joseph Carpenter-26356 (b. 3 Sep 1793 NY – 1 June 1872 NY)
son of Jonathan Carpenter-20098 (1749-1812) and Esther Coles (1759-1847). This Carpenter
line descends from William Carpenter-662 (the 1635 immigrant) and his wife Elizabeth
Arnold-663 who settled in Providence, Rhode Island. This is represented by Group 2 of the
Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.
Joseph C-26356 married Margaret W. Comell-26382 on 15 Sep 1814 in Westchester County,
NY. They had Esther, Jonathan and Dorcas.
Esther C-26390 was born 20 Jul 1815 in Scarsdale, Westchester, NY and died 26 Mar 1900
in Pleasantville, Westchester, NY. She married about 1835 Moses Pierce-26395 (abt 1816 NY
– 1886 NY).
Thanks to Moses Pierce, he and his extended family, including Esther Carpenter his wife,
would quietly impact hundreds if not thousands of people fleeing slavery.
Please see the article information below and the link it contains. It is a well
documented article and worth reading.
