Ken,
Zachariah Carpenter
b. 7/1/1680 Bristol Co. MA
d. 4/8/1717 Bristol Co. MA
Zachariah4 Carpenter was born 8 April 1718.
Samuel Carpenter
b. 1638 Bristol Co. Ma
d. 2/20/1982 Bristol Co. MA
Samuel3 Carpenter was born probably at Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony (that part in
present-day Norfolk Co.; neither Rehoboth nor Bristol Co. existed in 1638); he died on 20
February 1682[/3] (his probate records are dated such as to indicate that the death-record
year, 1682, is Old Style [year beginning 25 March]).
Capt. William Vincent Carpenter
b. 5/23/1605 Summerset, England
d. 2/7/1659 Bristol Co. MA
William2 Carpenter was neither a captain nor did he have a middle name (they were
extremely rare at that time). He was born about 1605, but the precise date is unknown; 23
May is a fabrication, and 1605 is an approximation based on his reported age in 1638.
While his place of birth is also unknown, it was presumably in the vicinity of Shalbourne,
on the Wiltshire side of the parish, where he lived from 1608 to 1637 or early 1638 and
where Wiltshire, Berkshire, and Hampshire converged; he was born probably in one of those
three counties. William1 Carpenter of Providence is often said to have been born in co.
Somerset, but that, too, is false. To be precise, William2 Carpenter died in Rehoboth,
Plymouth Colony (that part in present-day Bristol Co.), on 7 February 1658[/9]; the
double-dated year indicates Old Style and New Style dating. His death record says 1658,
but in May of that year, he was chosen Rehoboth way-warden, and on the following 22 June,
he was among those who drew lots for meadows lying on the north side of Rehoboth. It is
clear, therefore, that the death-record date, like Samuel3’s, is expressed in Old Style.
Rev. William Marden Carpenter
b. 1520 Wiltshire England
d. 1587 Wiltshire, England
William1 Carpenter had no middle name. While it is not impossible that William Carpenter
of Marden, Wiltshire, was his father, evidence of it has not been found. William1 was
born about 1575; his birthplace is unknown, as are his parents. He died probably at
Weymouth or Rehoboth, date unknown (no earlier than 1638).
