Thanks for your reply John. My Grandfather's name was Ernest Franklin
Carpenter so it obviously isn't my dad but I had thought about the
possibility that in fact the child may be named William. My grandfather's
brother was named Maurice William Carpenter who had a son named Jack Richard
Carpenter but he went by his given name of Maurice. I can't find any record
of another use of William in any of the last several generations. I was just
hoping that maybe someone else might have come across the names.

Dennis,
It was not that common for people to assume that sons were named after their
father. Often middle names are given wrong especially when they used
nicknames. For example, a nickname of "Lil Will" or "Junior" may cause
people to think the son was named after the father.
Who was your Jack L. Carpenter's father? If it was William, then the name
on the picture may be a simple error by who ever wrote it.
I think the key is your words, "... spitting image of other photos of my dad
..."

Hi Cousins,
...
I have had a photograph in a frame of a young boy circa 1920-30's
For
years
I thought is was a picture of my father Jack L. Carpenter. The boy
pictured
is the spitting image of other photos of my dad so I never questioned it.
The other day my wife was handling the photo and frame when the back fell
off and low and behold there was a name on the back. The child is
identified
as Jack William Carpenter, son of William Carpenter. Here is the mystery.
