Hi, Folks! I would like to apologize a second time to John L. Carpenter,
who is the "REAL" administrator of this list. (I apologized the first time
after my original posting which incorrectly named John R. Carpenter as the
list admin.)
John L. Carpenter has done a fabulous job keeping us connected and I'd like
to thank him for the great work he does for all of us Carpenters. He
doesn't get enough credit for the hours he donates to us "cousins."
That being said, I still REALLY ENJOYED meeting John R. Carpenter at the
SDSG meeting last year and if someone devotes some web space for posting
family resemblances, I have lots of old and (relatively) new photos to
share!

Lance,
Thanks for answering. There doesn't appear to be a connection--it was a
long shot. Perhaps someone could assist your cousin with the cheek swab--a
caretaker or closer relative? I am not sure if it is more complicated or
expensive to test from a licked envelope, a lock of hair or other things,
but it can be done. If have you other direct male-line Carpenter
descendants perhaps they will become interested in the future. My uncle was
the last male Carpenter of our branch, so it seemed important for him to
participate if we were to use DNA at all on that line. He thought it was
interesting and did the swab, though a relative had to assist a little.
Shortly afterwards he passed away. I had the funeral director clip a lock
of hair just in case anything more would be needed later. --Pam B.

Hi Pam:
Merle was born in Colorado and his father in Kansas. Before that it was
Michigan. Before that Rhode Island.
Unfortunately Merle is so elderly and doesn't remember things well. I
tried to get a dna sample from him. He agreed on the phone. I then sent
him a detailed letter explaining it all. But he doesn't remember receiving
a letter from me or the dna kit. So I don't think it will be feasible for
him to submit his dna under the circumstances.

Pam,
One of the concerns about DNA testing is privacy.
That said, there are some various pictures of Carpenters in the CE CD 2001
under the Misc Pics folder. And there will be more in the future.
John L. Carpenter (List Admin) and I (John R.) were often confused with each
other because of our beards and glasses. Now that he shaved off his beard,
he looks really looks better than me.
Some time ago on this list we remarked and discussed the two main body sizes
of male New England type Carpenters. One about 5'9" to 5'10" stocky and
muscular and the other body type thinner and about 6'3" or so. Hair types
went from black/brown to reddish (mainly in the taller males) with some male
pattern receeding hairlines. The 29" inseam was common in the smaller body
build. Eyes are basicly brown yet show a strong showing of lighter colored
eyes. At one point we even discussed the common European trait of the
second toe (next to the big toe) being about as long as the big toe!
My father is 6'3" and I am 5'10" and I resemble my uncle
(5'10.5") more than
I do my father. Yet my brother is a 6'3" and resembles my father. If their
were not over 4,000 miles difference in location, I would have wondered
about my sire!
I remember that in some famlies the male height difference in families often
jumped a generation. Are there exceptions in body types? Of course! I know a
few who have the thinner body type but not the 6' plus height.
Female Carpenters seem to run the entire specrum of body types, colors and
sizes.
All in all, there is nothing really strange about Carpenters except, well,
er, ah, ... a strong desire to learn more about our ancestry! :-)

On my Dad's side, (double Carpenter):
Harriet Wells Carpenter was much taller than her husband, Theodore Julian
Van Horn.
Their daughter, Amey Doris Van Horn, was at least 5'8"
My dad was 6/4"
My brother is 6', I was 5'7" until back surgery
My daughter, Shannon, is over 5'7" at age 15 and still shooting upward!!

Posting of April 17, 2008
I am trying to complete the Carpenter side of the Carpenter-Rice lineage.
I have established the fact that Charles Pomeroy Carpenter was my great,
great-grandfather.
I have plenty of information on Charles Pomeroy who is buried at the North
Church in Orwell, Ohio. I am searching for his predecessors. Based upon
various US Censuses from 1870 back through 1850, I believe his father to be
William Carpenter of Norway, Herkimer County, NY. He was born in Rhode
Island ca. 1809-1811. William of Norway had a son Charles P., born in NY in
1838. This matches the age of Charle Pomeroy Carpenter of the 1870 US
Census in Ohio taken in N Bloomfield, Trumbell County. In this 1870 Census
Charle Pomeroy lists NY as his birthplace, and dob as 1938. There was also a
William Carpenter in Russia, Herkimer, NY, but I do not believe they were
related.
William Carpenter of Norway, lists Rhode Island as his birthplace. Some US
Censuses list 1809 and others 1811. William of Norway had 2 sons, Charles P.
and Henry S. both born in NY. William lists Rhode Island as his place of
birth.
Based upon this information, I am reasonably certain the William of Norway
was the father of Charles Pomeroy Carpenter.
Assuming this is correct, who would be the father of William of Norway?
According to the 1830 US Census for Rhode Island, there were many Carpenter
families who had sons of 20-30 years of age, (the age of William of Norway
at this time.) Of these, there was a Henry Carpenter who listed a son of
this age bracket.
Considering that William of Norway had a son named Henry, could this Henry
Carpenter of Scituate, Providence, Rhode Island be the father of William of
Norway?
Does anyone have any information relating to the above search?
Thanks!
Ron C Carpenter
